Ecuador Wants Ebanks, but How Will They Get Him?
Thu, May 29, 2014
For weeks, we've been reporting on the Ecuadoran Fugitive, Floyd Wendel Ebanks - who was living in Belize under the name Christian Ebanks. He remains on remand at the Belize Central Prison for firearm possession.

The last we heard from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was that the Ecuadorians hadn't made any formal request for him to be handed over. But today, we caught up with the Commander of the Gang Suppression Unit, Superintendent Linden Flowers. He told us that law enforcement from that country has made contact with him, and that they're seeking him for murder:

Supt. Linden Flowers, Commander - Gang Suppression Unit
"Communications that have been received out of Ecuador is in fact that Mr. Ebanks is a person of interest in Ecuador and I would say that it has to do with a murder that occurred in Ecuador some years ago."

Reporter
"He is wanted for that murder?"

Supt. Linden Flowers
"He is wanted as part of that investigation."

Reporter
"Has the communication led to any diplomatic relationship meaning that they are asking for him to be send to Ecuador?"

Supt. Linden Flowers
"There is communication in that he would be a person on interest and they would like to have communication with him."

Reporter
"What's the process that should follow because the Immigration Minister Hulse told us that we don't have that sort of relationship with Ecuador and so what would be the process then?"

Supt. Linden Flowers
"That is something that we have to look at. I am nor privilege at this time to say that, but those matters would have to be referred to the foreign affairs and the attorney general's ministry to see what comes out of that."

Daniel Ortiz
"Sir, at this time can you tell us what is the immigration status of this gentleman? Is he Belizean, is he Ecuadoran? What is his nationality?"

Supt. Linden Flowers
"Mr. Ebanks was born in Ecuador and the information is that his mother is Ecuadoran and his father is Belizean national."

Reporter
"But him, he was born is Ecuador as well?"

Supt. Linden Flowers
"Born in Ecuador."

Reporter
"Do you know what year he came to Belize?"

Supt. Linden Flowers
"At an early age he came to Belize. His primary school's was done in Belize City."

Reporter
"That would mean that he must have travelled back to Ecuador to allegedly commit this murder?"

Supt. Linden Flowers
"Yes, from one of his visits to Ecuador an incident occurred."

Ebanks returns to Magistrate's Court on July 21, to face a criminal charge of keeping an unlicensed firearm, after a gun was found in the oven inside his Belize City home. Belize and Ecuador do not share an extradition treaty so sending him to the country to face trial for murder could prove complicated.

As we've told you, Ebanks is listed as one of Ecuador's most wanted because police in the Guayas Province believe that he murdered Ecuadoran Alejandro Martin Teofilo on Puna Island.

He is a Belizean citizen and has been living freely in Belize for the last four or five years. He claims to have been born here.
