Capital Police Still Looking For Stolen DOE Pickup
Thu, July 24, 2014
Last night, we told you about the Department of Environment Vehicle which was stolen in broad daylight yesterday from the busy market square in Belmopan.

Today, investigators were no closer to figuring out how the thief managed to pull it off, but they were able to brief us on what they know so far about it's last known whereabouts:

Inspector Dennis Myles, Acting OC - Belmopan
"What we do know is that Mr. Edgar Eck reported to us sometime after 9 yesterday morning he parked his brown 2008 Toyota Hilux in front of the environment office and from there it was stolen. The person from the environment - we had recorded statements from those persons and there is no definite lead in regards to the investigation."

Reporter
"Is it a case where he did had his key with him and maybe the window was bashed in to get access or using duplicate keys?"

Inspector Dennis Myles, Acting OC - Belmopan
"We are not sure. We are doing our investigation. What we do know is that they were in possession of the original key for the vehicle. When we received the report that the vehicle was stolen, we quickly informed Benque and San Ignacio police. We have even set up checks points along the Western Highway to ensure that we could have canvass in the vehicle, but it was fruitless. We didn't have any trails. To me they are targeting a specific type of vehicle and vehicles that are assign to the government of Belize and as you well know the vehicle that went missing from the Forestry Department was also a Toyota Hilux. What give the police the impression is that these vehicles are easily taken across the border, across Melchor."

Reporter
"Sir, any tips for holders of such vehicles?"

Inspector Dennis Myles, Acting OC - Belmopan
"The only tips that the police will offer is that what we do know is that from time to time these vehicles were taken into these mechanic shops or taken to these car wash place and you would leave your keys there and you could never tell - people might easily slip and duplicate these keys."

As we've told you it's a brown 2008 Toyota Hilux pickup with license plate number BMP B-0108, and anyone who has information on it whereabouts is asked to contact the nearest police.

Belmopan police are still on the look-out for Mayor Simeon Lopez's municipal government vehicle, which was stolen last week Tuesday. They also have no leads in that theft, and they are asking for the public's assistance.
