The Ushers Protest Against Guatemalan Embassy
Fri, October 3, 2014
And so now while there is another worrying issue affecting the Western Frontier, today in Belize City, protesters staged a demonstration in front of the Guatemalan embassy to send a distinct message to Guatemala about the murder of Constable Danny Conorquie. It began after 10 this morning and 7news was there to capture the event.

Courtney Weatherburne reporting
These chants were echoed along A Street this morning as about 30 protesters circled in front of the Embassy of Guatemala vehemently condemning the murder of 20 year old Constable Danny Conorquie by Guatemalan intruders.

While their chants were full of rage, their posters also gave voice to the distrust that many harbor towards those Guatemalans who make incursions into the Chiquibul.

PUP Standard Bearer Gilroy Usher who led the protest took it to another level when he threw 2 eggs at the embassy.

That gave the signal for the rest of the well "egg-quipped" group to launch their own egg blasts mostly harmless volleys - but symbolic of contempt.

Gilroy Usher Sr., PUP standard Bearer - Port Loyola
"We are out here to protest the cold blooded murder of the tourism office Danny Conorquie by Guatemalan poachers and what it outrageous about it is that these people have been invading our country time and time again as attacking our law enforcing officers with machete, shooting at them and nothing has been done. We think that enough is enough and that's why we come out here to take a stand. Throwing an egg at the embassy is miniscule compare to what their citizen did. One of their citizen murdered a police officer in cold blood, so throwing an egg at the embassy is nothing compare to that."

When was asked if he had a permit, he simply evaded the question.

Gilroy Usher Sr., PUP standard Bearer - Port Loyola
"We don't want to get into that. The bigger issue is the protest, we are standing for our rights in this country. When a Belizean soldier killed a Guatemalan on Belizean soil who was attacking him. We paid the Guatemalan $10,000 US compensation. Now in this case where a Guatemalan slaughtered a Belizean security officer, the government isn't even bold enough to acknowledge what a Guatemalan did, much less to ask them to pay compensation for Danny Conorquie's death."

Gilroy Usher Jr.
"We have shown that as a country whereby we want a diplomatic amicable solution to this problem but when things continue to escalate in that they are killing our national animals, they are exploiting our forest and even go far as kill one of our law enforcement agents - diplomacy has to go through the window."

So they held their ground until the police arrived. But the presence of the police didn't seem to intimidate the group.

Police repeatedly warned the protesters to disperse. But keenly aware of the publicity opportunity, Usher Sr. went into grandstand overdrive.

Gilroy Usher Sr., PUP standard Bearer - Port Loyola
"We intend to stand here and protest and send the message that enough is enough and we want a end to the poaching in our country by Guatemalans. I think before the policeman jump and want to arrest to us who are standing for our rights here, they need to go at the border and arrest the poachers - that is what they need to do."

Still, the police showed extraordinary patience even as Usher continued on a roll - and seemed to be taking it very seriously - so much so that it seemed for a second he might even risk arrest:

Eventually though, one of his protesters and his son formed a mini intervention team, pulled him over and convinced him that indeed enough is enough. With that, Usher took one last swing at it.

Gilroy Usher Sr., PUP standard Bearer - Port Loyola
"We call it a day, we had a successful protest, we had a successful demonstration. We came out here, not for ourselves, we came out here for all Belizeans, we come out here for our country and let us finish with our slogan before we go: "enough is enough," "keep the poachers out.""

A ringing chorus for a relatively obscure politician, but not so obscure anymore after this cleverly orchestrated event that tapped into genuine public sentiment - the kind that can be easily parlayed into real political currency:

Gilroy Usher Sr., PUP standard Bearer - Port Loyola
"We are out here for love of country."

After the protesters dispersed and the police officers drove away. But they had made their mark on this day. Even if it was scrawled in a slimy yellow paste.

There were about 30 protesters in the demonstration.
