On Saturday morning at around 8:45 - Ernel Kenroy Young, commonly known as Ernel Wellcome was found dead in his home on Causarina Street - which is just off Mahogany Street in Belize City. Police have concluded that a gunman walked in and simply shot him in the head. He was found lying face up on a bed inside a bedroom with an apparent gunshot wound to the center of the forehead.
It's a puzzling murder for police because no one in the busy neighborhood heard anything and it happened sometime after 8:00 am. That's highly unusual since the houses are quite close together, so there is speculation - even within police circles that a silencer may have been used.
That's very unusual and suggests that it was an execution. The 40 year old Wellcome had a number of run-ins with the law during his lifetime - and most recently was accused of a robbery in Orange Walk. An accident some time ago had left him with limited mobility.
But in the year two - thousand Wellcome was accused of one of the most sensational contract killings in Belize's history - the murder of Therese Blake, heiress to the Blake empire. But, he famously elude identification in an ID parade, when a corrupt police officer gave him a razor while he was in lockdown - allowing him to shave his head and eyebrows while he was in lockdown. He is seen here clean shaven after that event. He was never convicted for that offence.
