Belize’s Heptathlete
Tue, August 4, 2015
Professional Track & Field athlete Katy Sealy has been representing Belize for the past 5 years, but she started making the news last year June when it was first announced that she would be the Belizean Flag bearer for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, which were held in Glasgow Scotland.

Since then, this British-born Belizean athlete has continued to represent Belize at international athletics competitions, but she's never granted the local press any interviews before today. She did so this morning at the Biltmore Plaza Hotel, and one of the first things she was eager to discuss with the media was her connection to Belize. Here's what she had to say:

Katy Sealy - Professional Track & Field Athlete
"My granddad and father Sealy, lived and worked in Dangriga, and in Pomona at St. Matthew's Church. My dad was born in Dangriga and lived in Pomona, all my family then moved back to the UK. so I was born in England, but because my dad is Belizean and my mom is English, I've got both the passports so I'm dual -national. In 2010, I opted to represent Belize for track and field. I've been in Belize for the last week so my preparation has been a little bit different to normal. I've been doing some runs on the beach, I was in Placencia so I was doing some circuits. I'm going to head up to the Marine Jones Stadium tonight and do a session of the track there. But it's all about keeping legs sticking over because we're in the middle of the season, you don't need to train too hard at the moment. I did all my hard work through the winter, so it's all about maintaining and competing now. Because I've been competing for nearly 10 years now, so I'm used to it and I enjoy it. I think about it a lot in my mind, I go through the events in my mind, try to be positive and imagine a positive outcome rather than a negative outcome obviously. I'm with the heptathlon to see so many different events, I just break down each one, work through what I would do normally. It's going to be quite different this weekend because I'm only going to focus on 2 events. I'm hoping that might mean that I can bring out some good performances because I've got to focus on so much, but we'll see."

"You're confident?"

Katy Sealy - Professional Track & Field Athlete
"Yes."

Reporter
"Beyond the games this weekend, what's in store for you moving forward?"

Katy Sealy - Professional Track & Field Athlete
"Well this would probably my last international for the year. I'm going back to the UK and I've got a few smaller competitions over there, which takes me through to about September. And then I'll probably have a couple of weeks of and then I'll get into my winter training and prepare and ready for next year."

Daniel Ortiz
"There are those in the public who may pick a cynical view that your relationship is only of convenience because you live in eastern England and not only train there but you have that Belizean parentage, so how sincere is your representation in this country and taking track and field here in Belize to the next level?"

Katy Sealy - Professional Track & Field Athlete
"At first it was quite difficult because I was new and people didn't know who I was, but I've been traveling with the team for 5 years now. So I know the team really well and I'm starting to know people out here and I try to come out here as much as I can. One day I'd love to move out here and to help develop the track and field. That's one of my dreams and if I can save up enough money and come out here and help to coach the next generation that's what I'd love to do."

Sealy has been training and competing in track & field for the last 10 years. She lives and trains Eastern England. She is primarily at heptathlete but in the upcoming track and field games to be held in Costa Rica, she will be representing Belize in the long jump and the hundred meter hurdles.
