BTV Has a List of Demands, Ready To “Escalate”
Mon, September 14, 2015
The Belize Territorial Volunteers and COLA held a press conference in Belize City today. They focused again on Belize southern border with Guatemala - the Sarstoon River - but we found today that they are making four demands of government. Here they are:

Wil Maheia - Leader, Belize Territorial Volunteers
"Over the past years, this talk about not even a blade of grass or not even a blade of sand seems to be just words. Because as we speak today, Guatemalans are illegally occupying Belizean territory. Not only occupying but building infrastructure on Belize's territory."

Orlando De La Fuente, Belize Territorial Volunteers
"It's not our intension to tackle the government or have they fall in a way that would not be democratic but we do need to see a change in policy. The first demand is for the removal of Sedi Elrington, the Minister of Foreign Affairs. We believe that under his leadership, Guatemalans position has strengthened. The second one is for the removal of a road and power lines that loop into Jalacte, from Santa Cruz village. There's a Guatemalan village right across from Jalacte. The first time I went to a boarder trip with Wil, I was standing on the road and I saw on my GPS that the road entered into Belize territory. I showed the OAS representative and I asked him, 'is this real? Is this true?' and he said 'yes this road is on Belize territory'. The third one would be to stop the citizenships. Put a moratorium on the issuance of citizenships to Guatemalans. The last demand that we have to the government of Belize is for the construction of the forward operating base. Like Wil had said, if the base cannot be built at Sarstoon Island, it being such a vast ecosystem of its own. Just north of it on the mainland we could also build a base. But at some point we need to occupy or show sovereignty over the island and that could be in the form of a flag monument. Put the Belize flag on it flying. At the BTV we want to pledge the first $50,000 and we will do what we can to raise the funds abroad and within Belize from citizens, from Belizeans who wish for the base to be constructed."

Jules Vasquez
"You will make your demands and the government won't do anything about it. If history is to repeat itself, what then will you all do? Hold another press conference? Make more demands?"

Wil Maheia - Leader, Belize Territorial Volunteers
"We will have to take this to Belmopan and we are calling on the Belizean people to stand up for Belize. If we go to Belmopan, we will call on the Belizean people. We will have to go to Belmopan, we've gone through all our monuments, we've gone to Sarstoon and now we are going to Belmopan."

Orlando De La Fuente, Belize Territorial Volunteers
"Jules I think the answer is that we need to escalate. We need to raise the stakes."

Jules Vasquez
"Are you all prepared to accept funding from anywhere? I shouldn't say from anywhere, but suppose Mr. Ashcroft owns the hotel we are in, suppose he says 'boy the enemy of my enemy is my friend, and you know what I'm going to support you with the money to escalate' because maybe it's his interest is to bring pressure on the government. Would you all accept to funding such as that? Both political parties have?"

Wil Maheia - Leader, Belize Territorial Volunteers
"I believe that we have enough Belizeans who love this country."

Jules Vasquez
"But Mr. Ashcroft is a Belizean."

Wil Maheia - Leader, Belize Territorial Volunteers
"Yes he is a Belizean, we have a lot more Belizeans and if every Belizeans in the diaspora or in Belize donate $5, we'll have...."

Orlando De La Fuente, Belize Territorial Volunteers
"Jules, it is very unlikely that we will take donation from Lord Ashcroft, he is bad for Belize and has not done anything good for this country."
