FCD Finds Illegal Guats In Chiquibul
Fri, November 13, 2015
The Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD) are reporting tonight that along with the help of the law enforcement agencies, they caught 3 Guatemalans in Belizean territory conducting illegal activities.

On Monday, a joint patrol which included FCD rangers, BDF soldiers and police, came upon 23 year-old Andres Ortis Ordones and 43 year-old Isidro Garcia Roque. Both men are from the village of La Esmeralda, Peten, Guatemala.

They were found 10.5 kilometers inside the Chiquibul National Park near the Ceibo Grande Creek. That's the southern part of this forest reserve, and according to the FCD, they were near their hut with gold panning equipment. The pair had been panning for gold in a nearby stream. There was also signs of the negative effects of their camping out in the area, including soil erosion, defacing the reserve, and garbage pollution.

The law enforcement team arrested both men, and through strenuous and expensive efforts, both were taken to the San Ignacio Police Station where they were charged with illegal entry. They may end up facing other environmental charges such as defacing a protected area, and operating without a permit inside a national park.

Then, FCD Rangers were on a reconnaissance patrol yesterday at around midday in an area known as Cubetas and Cristina in the Chiquibul. That's when they came upon Rafael Brenes Garcia, who is originally from La Rejoya, Peten, Guatemala. He was found 17.7 kilometers inside Belizean territory. At his camp, he had a horse, over 6,600 fish tail xate leaves and 430.6 grams - or 1 pound - of marijuana. He was one of 2 Guatemalans who managed to escape back into La Rejoya.

Brenes Garcia was detained and escorted to Tapir Camp, and then to the San Ignacio Police Station. He's expected to be charged with illegal entry, illegal importation of a domestic animal, drug trafficking, and collecting a non-timber forest product without a permit.

He has revealed to the Belizean authorities that there is a person from Poptun who regularly visits La Rejoya Village to buy xate brought in illegally from Belize. The villagers sell xate in bundles of 40 leaves for 15 quetzales. So, with this bundle that the FCD caught him with, he would have made 728 Belize dollars.
