Mayas Complain About Land Rights
Fri, December 18, 2015
When will the Government start to implement the judgment from the Caribbean Court of Justice on Maya Land Rights? That's what the Maya Leaders Alliance wants to know.

They've now been waiting for 8 months, and the Maya want to see measurable steps being taken.

On Wednesday, when we asked Cristina Coc about it, she told us that Joseph Estephan, has being going around to the 39 Mayan communities and telling Villagers that he's acting on behalf of the Government. She told us that they are seeking a clarification from GOB if indeed this is true. Here's what she had to say on the topic:

Cristina Coc
"The court gave them up until January 21 to give a full report of what steps they have taken in terms of the implementation of that decision. We have not seen anything and nothing has been communicated to us on the part of the government. We have seen a lot of movement in the communities however, where we continue to see the likes of Joseph Estephan and his team go out to the communities and tell the communities that the government has hired them as the commission to deal with the Maya land rights case that they are going to actually embark on a land registration - a leasing registration using the funds that the court ordered the government to set aside and that that is what they are going to pursue in the coming month beginning January. We would like to see in the government is willing to either align themselves and identify themselves with Joseph Estephan, if he is in fact working for the government or to distance themselves from him, if he is fact not an agent of the state."

Today, when we spoke with Government Attorney Denys Barrow, he told us that he doesn't have any first hand knowledge, but that he seriously "doubts" that Estephan has been authorized to act on the Government's behalf. We also spoke with Lisel Alamilla, who we are told has been unofficially chosen as the Government's Head of Commission for the Maya Land Rights issue. She told us that Estephan has not, to her knowledge, been approached by the Government.

She also told us that this Commission that will implement the CCJ ruling on Maya Land Rights has still not implemented. That means that the Maya still have a bit more to wait for any tangible results.
