Youths Show Service in Belize
Fri, August 12, 2016
The United Nations says that the World's young people make up the largest generation of youth in history. And today, International Youth Day, was set aside to recognize their importance to the world's populations.

To celebrate it locally, the Department of Youth Services and the young people who regularly access their services, took some time out to organize a clean up campaign. It's their contribution to the recovery after Hurricane Earl and the Public Relations Officer explained more about it:

Sabreena Daly, PR. Dept. of Youth Services
"As you all know today is International Youth Day. Happy International Youth Day. I don't know if you area youth, but I am so I am celebrating it and the entire young people that comes in and out of department, we are celebrating it today. Initially we were hoping to have sort of celebration. We are going to have it at the ITVETT where all the camps that were happening throughout the month - last month, we are going to be showcasing what happened there; that was bamboo artwork, cupcake baking, jewelry making, music choir - a whole long list. So because of the weather as you know we weren't able to do all of that. Apparently the young people will be leaving, actually they are going to start with our cleanup campaign. They are going to start now to clean out BYS. If you notice where the mural is, it's really muddy from the sea water that rushed here from the hurricane. So we are just trying to start with cleaning up our area and after this they are going to leave to Caesar Ridge Road to do the rest and give their part through their support from the hurricane and do their volunteering."

Ayana Anthony, Youth Volunteer
"I'm participating because I like to see young people getting up to do something for our community to help because a lot of people are affected. We are just giving back."

For tomorrow, and the next 2 Saturdays, the volunteers will be organizing a clothes drive at 46 Vernon Street and the Yabra Drop-in Center.
