Customs And The Cops, “Making Nice”

In April we told you about the contraband cops who were caught on video trying to evade customs officers. The cops were attempting to smuggle a "bulto" of clothes past Customs, and tried to ditch the 40 pound bag on a sugar road.

The video was initially kept private by Customs in an attempt to preserve its relationship with the Police, however it was soon leaked online and to the media. Since that incident, there have been reports that the relationship between Customs and Police have been deteriorating. When we spoke to Comptroller of Customs, Colin Griffith earlier today, he said that both agencies are still as close as ever...

Colin Griffith, Customs Comptroller
"I can say that the relationship between customs and police is very good. You do have isolated incidents, but that doesn't speak to exactly what happens between customs and police. And I would never say that the relationship between customs and police is sore in any way whatsoever. Because of these incidents we have had discussions with the police high command. I can say specifically that our assistant comptroller in charge of Corozal met with the commander for the Corozal area, but there is no soring of any relationship between customs and police."
