Scholarships To Save The Environment
Wed, September 13, 2017
This morning the Department of Environment awarded eighteen lucky students with scholarships to further their studies in air conditioning and refrigeration. The students will be advancing their knowledge in this technical field as well as being educated on how to make these AC and refrigeration units friendly to our environment. We spoke to Environment minister Omar Figueroa and two of the scholars about this opportunity and what this small gesture means for the environment.

Hon. Omar Figueroa, Minister of State Agriculture. Fisheries, Forestry, Environment, & Sustainable tourism
"The government of Belize has provided 18 scholarships to deserving Belizeans. We are doing it through the department of environment because of course it focuses on refrigeration and air conditioning and it is extremely important for this field to be managed properly for the students to understand the technical aspect of refrigeration and for them to have proper tools so that we minimize leakage of harmful chemicals into the atmosphere so this scholarship I think will come a long way to allowing us to better meet our commitments to the Montreal Protocol by containing and minimizing the leakage of these chemicals to the atmosphere."

Cynthia Reyes, Scholarship Recipient
"I am in level 2 so I am studying track 1 level 1 from Orange-walk ITVET which includes AC and refrigeration, so I am going to pursue up to level 3 so that I can work in a big company and become my own boss and of course my company will be eco-friendly."

Edwin Cawich, Scholarship Recipient
"I am at Orange walk ITVET track 1 level 1. I haven't reached level 2, but I will try my best to reach and they gave me a boost to reach."

The scholarships will be taking these students to ITVET- Belize City, ITVET- Orange Walk and Cayo Center for Employment Training.
