CJ On the Move?
Wed, December 27, 2017

It’s been rumored for months that current Chief Justice of Belize, Kenneth Benjamin would be taking up a senior judicial post in Guyana.  The Attorney General Mike Peyreffite said it was not so, but tonight the Guyana Times is reporting that the CJ is on the move.

The paper reports, quote, “Benjamin has been tipped to be Guyana’s Chancellor of the Judiciary according to highly-placed sources and luminaries in the legal profession.â€￾

The paper says that Benjamin was interviewed earlier this year for the post and was handpicked by a committee put together by Guyana’s President and its Attorney General.   According to the paper, President Granger intends to appoint Benjamin in the New Year.  This is pending the consent of the Guyanese Leader of the Opposition, we gather form the article.

It’s an interesting dilemma for Belize’s judicial committee, because last week the Amandala reported that he will not complete 32 backlogged judgements upon a timeline set out by the Bar association. The Attorney General has said that Peyrefitte intended to finish at least twenty-two of them.
