The police department continues to do what it can to combat crime and violence, but as viewers are aware, they've not been able to put much of a dent in the murder rate.

But, crime has many elements, and there is no one fix which addresses all its root causes. That's why Police have been trying different types of community policing initiatives within the crime ridden City.

While he was the Head of Eastern Division South, Assistant Police Commissioner Chester Williams oversaw one such program which has now become the Sprite Eastern Division South Youth Basketball Cup. It has morphed into a public-private sector initiative to reach at risk youths who are trapped in the different gang neighborhoods.

This evening, the 3rd Eastern Division South Cup was officially opened for this year's season, and 7News attended the ceremony.

Here's what the speakers had to say about this 6-month long tournament:

As you heard, the Sprite Eastern Division South Cup will allow the different basketball teams to play games on different basketball courts around the city, kind of like the home and away games. The semi-finals and the finals of the tournament will be played inside the Civic, which should have already been opened.
