Shakera: Loss Into Leadership
Fri, March 23, 2018
And another mother of a son lost to violence who is coping with grief, and trying to offer some healing to the community in her own way is Belize City resident Shakera Young.

Yesterday at the Teachers rally against crime, she gave a very revealing testimonial to the general public about what she has been enduring since the tragic murder of her innocent son, 7 year-old Tyler Savery, which happened back in November of 2016.

Since then, she has decided to turn the tragedy into something positive, and so, she's organizing an event called the Light Our Hearts Rally, to give mothers and other grieving family members of slain loved ones an outlet to express that grief and rage.

We caught up with her this morning to discuss the second rally being held in Belize City tomorrow evening:

Shakera Young - Organizer
"We have our second annual Light Our Hearts Rally planned. It's coming through the Tyler Savery Foundation that I founded after losing. The initiative is basically to invite out the families that have been affected by the violence that has been occurring to come out. We want to invite them out this no longer something that we want to be quiet about. We want to show home many lives are being affected by what it is happening. We have scheduled a march to start tomorrow at 5 o'clock from Memorial Park. We will start at Memorial Park. We go into Craig Street, Barrack Road, Hydes Lane, and then back in North Front Street, and we finish off. We will start the rally immediately after. The rally basically a medium that we will use to minister to the attendees to introduce them to something different than what they're used. I am a Christian, and so, I want to introduce them that person that brought me where I am now, and that is God. Many people may think that I am crazy to be where I am right now, but that's okay. I want other women to be at that place, and I want other people to be at that place where I am. And so, we could move forward. We have to learn to forgive. We have to learn to let go of things, and move on. We don't have to stay at that place where we allow anger and bitterness to take over us. So, we would like to invite them out, to come out and share that experience with us. I've gotten response from a few families, yes, that they will be and we also have Miss Marcia. She has a group that she's spearheading. So, they will be out as well, and I just want to point out that at the rally, we will have a ministry time for those who want or feel that they need assistance to move forward. We have my church ministry that is behind me, and they will be out there offering their services to the people. We will have give away for them. We have nails, hair, and other giveaway for stuff. We have some hampers that I got donated from Madisco, and the market vendors. So, we will definitely see some guacamole ingredients. But, it will definitely be a very refreshing time for them. And, I hope that they do come out."

The rally starts at 5:00 at the Memorial Park.
