Crazy Vendetta Killing Extends Cycle of Retaliation
Mon, March 26, 2018
And from lawlessness in Ghost Town, we turn now to the weekend murders, starting with the one which happened in the Lord's Bank Village.

Over the past 2 weeks, we've been showing you the street feuds in the Lake Independence Area of Belize City that have claimed the lives of 2 older women in 2 separate families. 52 year-old Bernadine Louriano was murdered in her home on Aloe Vera Street. It is believed that she was targeted by her son's enemies in an attempt to get at him.

Then, a week later, 64 year-old Theresita Flowers and 17 year-old Delcia Blanco, were shot and killed in their home on Tibruce Street, which is only 1 street away from Lauriano's home.

And, now, it appears that this feud between men from these two families has claimed the life of another member of the Lauriano Family. 28 year-old Justin Orellana, nephew of the Bernadine Lauriano, was shot and killed inside his home in Lord's Bank Village, early on Sunday morning. We found out that Orellana's killers hunted him down all the way inside his house:

Daniel Ortiz reporting
28 year-old Justin Orellana was found dead inside this house on Edwin Parks Street in Lords Bank Village.

ASP Alejandro Cowo, Head of CIB
"Upon arrival inside of a small house police observed the motionless body of male person lying face up on top of a bed. Inspection on the body revealed that he had several apparent gunshot wounds to the body and police found several expended shells on the scene. What police has gathered so far is that the male person was identified as Justin Emmanuel Orellana 28 year old Belizean of that said address. We understand he was sharing this room with another male person who police is looking for at this moment to assist us in this investigation."

Speaking with residents around Lords Bank we found out today that people living nearby heard gunshots ring out early that Sunday morning, but nobody came to check what happened. As a result, his body was not found later that morning. First responders told us that they saw him on his bed, with a machete in his right hand. He suffered gunshot wounds to the left hand, and the chest. Neighbors believe that his assailants came all the way to his house, and they shot him several times while he was in his bed.

One family member, who asked that her identity be shielded, told us off-camera about the moment his body was discovered by relatives and friends

"About 7am or a little after 7am, I saw my granddaughter run pass here and I ask her what was going on, but she didn't answer. She went and visit my grandson and they went by the house and when my son came back he told me that they found him dead in the house. We all went there and then everyone talking when we heard the gunshot about after 3 that same Sunday morning. We called the police, but they took a long while before they came and so we call them again and they came."

Orellana is a security guard for one of the BTL compounds in the Ladyville area. He's described as a man who keeps mostly to himself. He reportedly goes to work, and then straight back to his home.

Ordinarily, that would have been enough to keep him safe from harm, but there were other elements at play against him. He's the nephew of the late Bernadine Louriano, who was murdered just over 2 weeks ago. A week later, there were the double murders of Theresita Flowers and Delcia Blanco, which, is believed to be a direct retaliation for Louriano's murder.

Neighbors tell us that police sought Justin Orellana as a person of interest. They reportedly wanted to find out if he was somehow involved in the fatal shooting of the women

Courtney Weatherburne
"Can you confirm if Justin was related to Ms. Bernadine Louriano?"

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"Yes, he is a family member of the late Bernadine Louriano. Our investigation has also shown us that about a month ago he had made a complaint where he was assaulted with a firearm by two individuals and police are looking into that matter which involved one of the family members of the other persons called out in the double murder."

Orellana's friends tell us that they were very surprised to hear police were interested in speaking with him about the double murder, since he had a set routine going only from work to home.

His family member told us that he tried to stay away from recent shootings connected to his family in Belize City.

"Since Mr. Louriano was here did he socialize, did he visit the family a lot here?"

Voice of: Family member
"Well yes, he socialize with us, but to tell you the truth from he was up here I never saw him, I only heard he was up here. Because up to Saturday night, a young lady told me she saw him going at the Chinse shop to buy. But I didn't see him at all."

Reporter
"Did they say if he had problems with anyone?"

Voice of: Family member
"Just that he came out of the yard because of the shooting."

Long before his murder this weekend, Orellana himself has had a difficult time.

At the age of 17, he went to jail on remand after being accused of stabbing his stepfather, Cecil Thompson, to death.

Upon his acquittal back in September 2012, his defense attorney described him as a person who quietly endured 5 years in prison while he awaited trial.

"I think it's not only a display of his level of his innocence, but also a display of his level of patience, and his somewhat resignation to the facts of his circumstances. He is in custody, and there is nothing productive in being rebellious, belligerent, showing any manner of disrespect to the authorities, and that is not his personality in any event. Mr. Orellana - and I refer to him as Mr. Orellana because in the short space of time that I have come to know him, he has presented himself to be a most stellar individual - Mr. Orellana is a soft-spoken, respectful young man who, prior to this incident occurring - although being from a poor and humble family, he worked hard at school, did his best, and contributed to the welfare of his family."
