Latest Lawbooks Donated
Wed, April 11, 2018
The Commander had the attorney general with him - because he had just donated a new set of lawbooks. They're not cheap, but they are very valuable. And Peyrefitte says the squeaky wheel approach paid off for Gillett:...

Mike Peyrefitte, Attorney General
"What happened is that Sr. Superintendent Gillett, he defines what he means by the squeaky wheels get the grease. When he was in Belmopan he was behind me aggressively for a set of law books and we provided him with the opportunity to get the most updated laws of Belize in printed form. So, you don't have to worry about internet connection and all of that. If you want to research what the current law is then you can simply go to those books and you can research the laws. Shortly after that, unfortunately for us, Mr. Gillett got transferred to Belize City and I was hoping he would have brought those laws to Belize City but he said no, he needs to beg me for another set. So, we had to relent because it is important. It is interesting and it is refreshing that you have a police division commander who is requesting the law to be current with the law. So, what we have here today is another donation worth about $5,000 and then we have provided him with the bounded ones- the pretty ones in the green binders- up to 2011 and by the end of the week they should have the other ones that are bounded that are not in this form yet but we will get from Print Belize. As well, of course, of the anti-gang legislations that were just passed: the firearms act, crime control and criminal justice act, and the witness protection act. So, that is what we are doing here today so that the Easter Division can have the laws as they exist to the minute in the country. They have to do their research, the police officers have to know what the basic law is, at the very least, when they are dealing with the whole problem of crime. We are trying to address crime."

Sr. Sup. Howell Gillett- O. C. Belize City Easter Division
"It would take less of the course time and then we expect the conviction rate to increase as a result of the officers having first-hand knowledge of new sets of laws in Belize."
