Did CITCO Firings Prompt A Fire Starter?
Thu, May 10, 2018
She's the Director of Administration at City Hall - and Charlene Rudon signed at least half of the six letters of termination that went out on Tuesday. And that's why it has raised all kinds of alarms after someone tried to torch her SUV last night. It happened at around 11:00 in front of her home when someone threw a molotov cocktail at her Ford Escape. The vehicle was damaged, but not destroyed. Police told us more:

ASP Alejandro Cowo, O.C., C.I.B., Eastern Division
"She reported to police that whilst at her residence they heard a noise coming from their vehicle. Upon inspection they noticed that the front portion of the vehicle was engulfed in flames. The fire was managed to be contained and as a result it sustained minor damages to the vehicle. What we have gathered so far is that the vehicle was parked there and 2 persons apparently threw a bottle with some accelerant that caused the fire to the vehicle. It is something that we are still investigating. We are waiting for her to go to the station to give an official report and to say what will be her exact account of the incident."

"Are you all investigating from, the angle that Miss Rudon's signature appears on at least 2 of the termination letters that I have seen for city council employees who have been recently terminated. Is that an angle you're looking at?"

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"Yes we are looking at all those angles. She is presently at the Belize City council and there has been a feud between some of the persons that were being fired. It is an angle that we're looking at."

Reporter
"Foreseeably, might you all be questioning any of the persons who were terminated?"

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"Yes that is part of the investigation that the police will do."

Yesterday, the city council sent out a statement saying it is restructuring - and that's why five of the six were sent home.

But, today's Belize Times has a statement with a very different tone. Quoted in the headline article, it says, quote, "It was clearly a deliberate and dangerous act of arson, and there can be no doubt that it is directly related to the recent restructuring of the Council which has resulted in the termination of six persons…The Council continues to "condemn this reprehensible act…as no less than domestic terrorism." End quote.
