Man Killed in His Own Neighborhood, Possibly for Boledo Winnings
Wed, May 23, 2018

This afternoon, a swarm of police mobiles flooded the Lakeview and Mayflower Street area after a fatal shooting inside the gang stronghold.

The victim was 34-year-old Carlton Moreira - a plumber and lifetime resident of the area. Around 1:15 Moriera was walking down the alley to his home on Lakeview Street when he was fatally shot.

By all appearances, it is another case of an innocent man who stayed away from trouble being targeted. Sahar Vasquez was on the scene and found out from his wife that the 34-year-old may have been killed for after he came up big on a boledo win:

This morning Angela Heinz woke up a happily married woman but she had no idea that before nightfall, she would be a widow and her two children would be fatherless. She spoke to us off camera:

Angela Heinz - Wife of Deceased
"I just left him ten minutes before one. I was about to go to work I left him and he was happy. Thirty minutes later I got the message. This is really tragic. I don't know if I can deal with it."

After saying goodbye to Heinz her husband 34-year-old Carlton Moreira left their apartment to go and get something in the alleyway. It seems he had all intentions of coming back because he left the stove on but he never made it back.

Angela Heinz
"I still can't believe that this actually happened I just feel like I just want to die too. I am just thinking about my kids most. They really depend on their dad. My baby does not know yet and I don't know how I will tell him. He is so close to his dad."

Moreira grew up here at his home on Lakeview Street next to this small alley that leads directly to Mayflower Street which is the base for a major gang. He made it his life mission to not ever get involved in any gang activity but he still lost his life senselessly.

Angela Heinz
"I have no idea. He doesn't give trouble. He has lived in this area all his life. From the time I met him, he does not have any beef any gang or anything. Even though he lived in this area he was not in a gang."

According to his wife, he had just won Boledo last night and she believes it is a strong possibility that someone wanted his winnings.

Angela Heinz
"Well he did not actually tell me but he was hanging out with his friends and he told them that he won and everything. He did not tell me directly. I know he had money and so forth. He is somebody that it does not want to give you what he has he won't give you. He works hard for his stuff. If you just go and say give me something he wont let go so easy. I don't have any idea. Maybe it was the way that he spoke. Honestly, I don't know why they killed him."

And for her, there is no doubt that it is someone he has known all his life.

Angela Heinz
"I think that is someone right from here. Actually past this alley. It has to be. Nobody will tell me that it is not that person. No stranger will come in through this alley. It has to be somebody that he sees every day and that talks to him every day, that must have been hating on him for a long time."

Moreira was a devoted father and husband. He had a contagious laugh and big heart. His two children aged 13 and 5 will be graduating next month and he wanted nothing more than to be a proud father sitting in the audience cheering them on but instead he will be lying in a coffin.

Angela Heinz
"What really bugs me the most is both of them will be graduating next month and that will be so sad that the father will not be here for them. I don't think I can actually be there by myself."

A total of nine mobiles were at the scene. We are told police do have suspects who are from that area - again, because it could not have come from outside.

Street reports say that Moreira won a substantial sum when "21" played last night.

And, just about half an hour ago - someone else was shot on the city's southside.  It reportedly happened near Roger's Stadium - and the extent of injuries is now known at this time.
