Mass Shooting In Trial Farm, Was It Over Turf?
Wed, June 27, 2018

Tonight, a husband, his wife, and their 2 young adult friends are hospitalized at the Northern Regional Hospital after they were injured in a crazy shooting at their home in Trial Farm, a village just outside of Orange Walk Town.

It happened at around 7:00 last night, at the home of 25 year-old Nazario Herrera, when a gunman stepped in, guns blazing.

The shooter sprayed the area with bullets, and several members of the group end up getting seriously injured.  It's the kind of mass shooting - which we see only rarely in the city - and Orange Walk hasn't known this kind of thing since Rambotown days of the 80's.

Today, our news team traveled to Trial Farm looking for answers. Daniel Ortiz reports:

25 year-old Nazario Herrera; his common-law wife, 26 year-old Diana Ack; and their two friends, 19 year-old Victor Ku; and 20 year-old Monico Gomez, were injured in a mass shooting incident which happened at his home in Trial Farm Village.

At this time, it is unclear to the press why the couple and their companions were targeted, but we've been able to piece together a few details. Herrera, Ack, Gomez, and Ku were inside the couple's home on San Narciso Street, and they were socializing.

Sometime around 7 p.m., a gunman barged into their yard, through the gate, and immediately opened fire on the group.

"I was just going to feed my baby, I was at my neighbor's house and I heard like 8 shots and my neighbor just told me run, run and we just ran way to the front there, it was scary. I was really like terrified when the shots were finished, I could see like the neighbors running looking all terrified and it took a while for the police to reach, I just saw people running all around but we didn't come out."

After the shooting stopped, everyone realized that 4 members of the group had been hit by gunshots. Nazario Gomez was injured to the buttocks area, and Victor Ku was injured to the left foot. The shooting victims who suffered the most serious injuries were Diana Ack and Monico Gomez, who were injured to their chest. They are reportedly still in a critical condition at the hospital, and the doctors are attempting to save their lives.

And while 4 injured is bad enough, residents say that there could have been more victims, since the couple always has a large group of young people socializing in Herrera's yard.

"I saw my neighbor, the owner of the house I saw him but I don't know about the rest because like I told you they like to have crowd of boys there, all the boys were there. There is the husband, the wife and they have like 3 children, then usually like 7 boys that go there like that."

"They were all present there last night?"

"They were all there last night because we saw when they ran. When some ran, I can't say who got hurt."

Among those who spent a lot of time at Herrera's yard is Victor Ku. Even though he is only 19 years-old, he no longer lives with his parents, and his step-father told us today that he tried his best to guide him away from questionable company who could be up to no-good. Ku's stepfather said that when Ku turned 18, he moved out of his parents' house, and he has since been living on his own.

"Well, right now I don't know because his mother just came and told me he got shot, I don't know I think in his feet or something like that but like how I am working I don't have the time to check and see but right now he is like 19, he got like 3 years he separated from us. I trained the boy to work, he's a good worker, he cuts cane and I try to advise him from problem from the street. When he was living with me, I got him everything is all right but when he got like 17 and 16 sometimes you can't talk to them. You talk to them but they don't want to do what you tell them, so afterwards he complete his age and I talk to him a lot but he like hangout with some bad friends and must be he doesn't have a lot of problems but because of the friends well he get in problem. I try to advise him, I started to raise him from 6 years, I trained him, sometimes we work together hard, I put him in a good condition to do a job and he learnt the job but it's only when they get of age, you can't control them then."

Diana Ack and Monico Gomez are in a critical but stable condition. Nazario Herrera and Victor Ku are in a stable condition.  Police haven't arrested anyone.

Nazario Herrera's neighbors didn't want to talk much, and would only say that there have been disputes at the house, some of them very bitter and confrontational, with him and his wife.  Street sources suggest last night's mass shooting may have been the product of a turf war.
