That’s The Truth, Youth!
Fri, July 6, 2018
Last night, we showed you the luncheon that the National Sports Council held for the young Belizean basketballers brought home Gold and Silver medals from the Hoops on the Beach Tournament in Cancun.

We didn't get a chance to show you our interviews with the talented ballers themselves, and so, tonight, we have those for you, including their plea to the Government to start focusing on the proper training regimen for the next generation of ballers, now that the sporting facilities in Belize are starting to catch up with international standards. Here's how they put it:

Llewellyn Gentle - Shooting Guard, U-19 Team
"Playing against the teams, we could obviously tell from the beginning that they had a lot more practice time than us. But, what we had over there, we had a lot of raw athleticism. We had a lot of team chemistry because practicing, a lot of the players on the team, we play in other tournaments before so we know each member plays. But, if we had opportunities to be in gyms for hours upon hours, day after day, gyms that are just open to us, and putting in our own work, nobody could really take us out there. We don't have that, and we still won the tournaments. So imagine if we did have it."

Daniel Ortiz
"Being recognized by the National Sports Council, give us your honest opinion."

Phillip Parks - Point Guard, U-19 Team
"For me, it's very open. It's more - I can see that they can see what we we are doing, and how we are ding it by not just ourselves , but Mr. Naveed, and different sponsors opening up to us. We just need to put in more work, get more sponsors, and go to more tournaments, so that belize can get more notice. And We got raw talent."

Kerdell Tench - Point Guard, U-17 Team
"This is a lot of tournaments that we go and participate in as a team, but only the facilities we are are lacking, and a lack of the training."

Nicolas Phillips - Member, U-19 Team
"Our team now, to be honest, I think that we are at an all-time high level now, that I think we put our country on a scale where no one thought it would be because we have some really talented players in there. Just by raw talent, if they put in work on a regular basis like the US do, Belize can be really scary. And that's something that I think that higher people should really put into our youths, because there is a lot of raw talent, and there is more raw talent coming up. And if we put in the work, Belize can be really scary."

Paul Flowers Jr. - Member, U-19 Team
"Belize, for so many years, has been considered as one of the countries that are lower in talent, and lower in resources. I believe that since now that our resources are getting better, and our facilities are getting better, I think the teaching should get better. And the effort that we put into our youths, and the effort that we put into the children that are coming up, I think that should be upgraded so that Belize can win. We are ready to win. Our youths are hungry. They are really hungry. The U-13 beat everybody by 20. I don't think you can get more hungry than going against the natives and beating them on that scale in front of - I would say - 200 people. So, I believe that Belize, if we would put more efforts into basketball, and into sports, I think that Belize would start to win. I think we are tired of losing."

The Director of the National Sports Council publicly promised them yesterday that some of the Council's limited financial resources will be funneled into development programs.
