Mon, July 23, 2018
A San Narciso villager had his luck transformed when he landed on the winning combination of numbers for the Fantasy Five jackpot.

He is Esequiel Yupit and he says that this was only third time playing the game. But the third time proved to be the charm, and his big win came just as his family was going through some financial difficulties. On the verge of tears he told us his story off camera:

Yupit's take home from the jackpot is $198,900 after a 15% tax take. The next Fantasy Five Jackpot has been started at $200 thousand.

Over 400 million people in the world live with diabetes, a figure which includes many children.

That's why the Belize Diabetes Association is hosting its 8th annual juvenile diabetes summer camp where kids receive interactive lessons about living life with diabetes. We found out more.

35 children registered for the program which will be ongoing this entire week. To learn more about how you can become a part of it you can visit the association's office at the corner of the Central American Boulevard and Mahogany Street or call their number at 203-3333.

A Camp For Young Farmers

And from a Diabetes Summer Camp to one where kids can learn to grow food that will ensure they don't get diabetes!

We're talking about agriculture. The Ministry of Agriculture and the police department are trying to get kids interested in life on the farm through their summer camp.

200 Southside Youth from the city along with kids from the Cayo district are participating in the two week camp beginning today. They will learn about vegetable production, pig and tilapia rearing, cheese and ice cream production, horse husbandry, grafting and budding. In a release it states "The objective of the summer camp is to make agriculture more appealing to the youths, recognizing it as a vital career, especially with an ageing population of farmers. The camp also serves as a means of keeping youths engaged in positive activities, and reducing incidences of crime committed by youths."

Also, apart from the agriculture camp, the Eastern Division Region One and the Belize Coast Guard have teamed up to teach 50 city kids to swim at Old Belize. It's a one week training programme.

Belize Gets Silver in B-Ball Tourney

Belize won a silver medal at this weekend's FIBA Americup Qualifiers. The three country tournament was played this weekend at the City Center. The Belize team lost to Costa Rica 57 to 52 in the gold medal game. Turnovers and terrible shooting by the Belize side proved to be the difference maker in this contest.

So, Costa Rica left with Silver and went undefeated with a 2 and 0 record, while Belize went 1 and 1, and El Salvador still got bronze although it lost both its games.

The Fight Over FiestaRama

If you are a resident of Orange Walk, you'll know all about Fiestarama. It's an annual event held by the Orange Walk Town Council, in which all types of entertainment are presented for Belizeans all across the country to come out and enjoy.

The Town Council foots the bill to organize it, and they say that whatever profits they make goes directly into works for the municipality, and community projects for the residents, such as school fees for children from needy families.

It's hosted every year at the People's Stadium in the Town, but up until this evening, there was uncertainty about whether or not it would happen this year. That's because the PUP Town Council was in a contractual dispute with the National Sports Council. Both sides agree that the Town Council owes the National Sports Council rental fees for the People's Stadium, but they can't agree on just how much.

The Town Council asserted that it was less than $1,500 dollars in arrears from last year, but the Sports Council, which owns the facility, says that it's actually a little over $3,600. Mayor Kevin Bernard and National Sports Council Director Ian Jones agreed to a contract last year, where the Council would pay them 10% of gate sales, and an additional 10% on all other services such as the bar sales. They've billed the Town Council accordingly, and Mayor Bernard and his team are crying foul.

They say that the National Sports Council bill is far too high, and because the Town Council failed to pay on time, the National Sports Council his playing hard ball. They are agreeing to rent out the People's Stadium to the Town Council this year, but instead, they will have to pay one full sum of $5,000, and additionally, they want their outstanding $3,600 up front, or they will not open up the gates of the sporting complex.

That's put additional pressure on the Town Council, since they've already planned this year's Fiestarama for this weekend, and changing venues right now, would be a high headache. Today, we spoke with Mayor Bernard via phone, and he shared his grievances with us. Here's what he had to say:

And since the entire press was asking the National Sports Council Director for a comment in response, he hosted an impromptu press conference to make the point that he and the NSC feel justified in the charges that the Town Council is being billed for. He said that the Mayor signed the agreement, failed to live up to it, and that's why the NSC has to take this hardline:

We asked the National Sport Council Director about the complaints that Mayor Bernard said that the bill was too high, and that it would negatively affect the community outreach objectives of Fiestarama's profit margins.

He said that the National Sports Council has its own obligations to develop sports around the country, and since the Council doesn't get a portion of the national budget, they have to fundraise. He also added that this revenue from the rental of these sporting complexes also go into repairing the wear and tear on these public buildings.

But, it seems that a resolution is being worked out. Late this evening, Mayor Bernard reached out to us to say that payment toward the arrears have made, and he has a meeting tomorrow with Deputy Prime Minister Patrick Faber and Ian Jones to negotiate on this $5,000 rental fee that the National Sports Council wants to charge for this weekend. We'll keep following it, and we'll tell you how it goes.
