Thu, August 2, 2018
Last night, we told you about 20 year-old Tyrique Swazo, and 19 year-old Kyle Mariano Perez, the men police charged for daring robbery attempt at CP Gas Station in Belize City, which was caught on camera. Well, tonight, they are on remand at the Belize Central Prison.

As we reported, at around 7:30 on Monday morning, two robbers stormed into the gas station, and attempted to rob one of the family owners. Their faces were completely visible to the surveillance camera, which recorded the entire event.

The owner attempted to fight off the men, but they ganged up on him, beat in the head, and pistol whipped him. The owner, even though he was hurt, still grappled with them both until the men ran off without taking anything.

Today, police discussed how this surveillance video of the incident helped them big time to identify and charge Swazo and Perez for attempted robbery:

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino, C.I.B., Eastern Division
"On the 30th July, sometime around 10am, police were called to the CP Gas Station at 1.5 miles on the Phillip Goldson Highway. There they spoke to the manager Mr. Nelson Rancharan, a 40 year old resident of Belize City. He reported that whilst entering the service station, he was accosted by 2 male persons. One of whom was armed with a firearm. Whilst inside the building a struggle ensued between him and both persons and both culprits made their escape through the front door damaging the glass door of the gas station on leaving the building. Mr. Rancharan received injuries to his head and nothing was stolen. 2 persons were detained and one Kyle Perez, a 19 year old of 2859 Curassow Street and Tyrique Swazo, a 20 year old of #5 Iguana Street. They were both charged on Wednesday 1st, jointly for attempted robbery, wounding and Mr. Swazo was additionally charge with damage to property. There was footage of the incident and that assisted in the investigation."

Today in court 20-year-old Tyrique Swazo and 19-year-old Kyle Mariano Perez were both charged jointly with one count of attempted robbery, one count each of wounding for allegedly clubbing the gas station owner who was fighting them off, and Swazo alone was charged for damage to property for allegedly breaking the glass door.

They were caught on camera, but pleaded not guilty. Magistrate Khadeen Palmer asked them if they had any special reasons she should grant them bail - since bail can only be granted under special circumstances once a firearm is involved.

Swazo told the court that he's about ot get a job at a local hardware store, and "should be working soon." He also asked the court to take into consideration, the fact that he has a child on the way. Perez asked the court to please take into consideration, the fact that, "He just got his job as a Construction Worker and if he goes to jail today, he will lose his job by the time he gets out. " He added that if he goes to jail, he won't be able to live with his mother anymore and will be on his own. But after listening to both, Magistrate Palmer was not impressed and and remanded them into custody until October 4, 2018.
