Fri, September 14, 2018
We also asked Deputy Prime Minister Faber about the major drug plane bust up north. As we told you, 5 persons have been charged, including veteran cop Supt. David Chi. and a police constable, Norman Anthony. Faber discussed Belize's curse in being the prime transshipment point for narcotics in the region and also spoke on the involvement of cops in these drug plane landings.

Hon. Patrick Faber, Deputy Prime Minister
"The reason why drug planes see Belize as a target is because we are a small nation, we don't have the ability to police the borders in the manner in which we want. It is evident that planes that land here and other transshipment that goes on passes Belize in an effort to get to the United States. If we were not geographically located here this kind of trouble would not exist for us."

"That would be my next question in terms of the drug plane, just your comment on that and in terms of the police involvement in the drug plane landing."

Hon. Patrick Faber, Deputy Prime Minister
"Well it is indeed sad but I think it was commissioner Whylie who said there are good cops and bad cops even in our own families there are some family members that are wayward and some that are doing the right thing. This is how it is. Once there are human beings involved in an entity there will be that element of wrongdoing at times. So it puts a really black eye on the police if indeed that is the case. I believe people are innocent until proven guilty but if it is that police officers especially the kind of senior ranking police officers we have been hearing about are involved in that then that is indeed sad and in fact we ought to be taking measures against such officers that are giving the department a black eye."

Tonight, Superintendent David Chi and PC Anthony remain in prison - they may apply for bail next week - and we'll tell you how that hearing goes. Along with two Mexicans and a Blue Creek Resident, they are charged for the abetment to the importation of cocaine. Chi, Anthony and Friessen have been additionally charged with the aviation offense of conspiracy to land a plane at an unlicensed aerodrome. The Mexicans and Friessen have been charged with drug trafficking for entire cargo of the cocaine found on the plane. There are credible reports which suggest that there are text messages discussing the details of the plane landing which implicates the lawmen.
