It’s a New Day for Fisheries in Belize
Wed, November 28, 2018
The Fisheries Department held it's first stakeholder meeting for what's called the Ocean Economy and Trade Strategies in Belize. The main objective of the meeting was to discuss the beginning stages of implementing a 3 year project which will enhance the productivity in the Fisheries sector. The department is partnering with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development and one of their representatives told us more about this project.

David Vivas, Rep., UN Conference for Trade and Dev.
"We are organizing together with the government of Belize the first national stakeholder meeting to asses economic ocean space sectors with potential for Belize. That includes all the fisheries sector and the tourism sector. The idea is to develop a strategy so Belize can see the potential."

Reporter
"What are some of the specific areas or topics you all are discussing at this meeting?"

David Vivas
"We are discussing coastal; fisheries, aquaculture development to recover after some problems that the country has on certain diseases of the shrimp and also seafood manufacturing and coastal tourism."

Reporter
"Is there a specific framework that Belize has at this time as it relates to all of these topics?"

David Vivas
"Yes, we will develop a plan of action in 2 sectors and all that should be under the frame of the multilateral system and the convention of the laws of the sea. I think it's very important for the country of Belize. Belize is coastal country with huge potential untapped. We are here to help the country to make it through."

The event concludes tomorrow.
