Thu, February 7, 2019
On Monday, we told you about the accident which claimed the life of 23 year-old Marlena Mortis, a teacher from Belize City.

At around 6:00 on Monday morning, she was attempting to cross the Philip Goldson Highway between miles 2 and 3, near DK Supermarket. She was hit and died on the spot form her injuries.

At today's police press briefing, the media asked police if they have charged the driver. Here's what ASP Alejandro Cowo had to say.

ASP Alejandro Cowo - OC, CIB Belize City

"Is there any concern at this point this fatal traffic accident, that people are still jumping the barriers?"

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"It is a concern because the loss of life means a lot, and despite that, people seem not be really paying attention, or seeing the risk that they are putting themselves in whenever they are jumping these barriers, or even the dividers by where the accident happened, and the one by Palotti High School. Everyday in the mornings, we keep seeing students, parents, adults, trying to get to the other side of the highway, which is much faster for them, but not knowing the risk that is coming behind it. We'd advise them that the pedestrian crossing, the upstairs one, was built for that reason, for them to utilize it. Yes, we understan that sometime you want to save time, but you have to be considerate yourself for another road user likewise. Because, there is an innocent driver that is coming, and he does not know what is your intention. And so, you end up in front of him, and it's very difficult to avoid a situation like that."

As you heard, police are strongly urging pedestrians to simply suffer the inconvenience of having to walk to one of the roundabout in this areas and then safely crossing the road, instead of putting their lives at risk by trying to jump these barriers. They are also trying to dissuade people from jumping over the highway's median near the Pallotti High School. They insist that this is also another dangerous way to cross the road, especially during rush hour traffic.
