It is the second murder in a few months caused by a mentally ill man. In June, Collin Francis killed Nestor Jude Vasquez in the Queen Street police station holding cell - and yesterday his family issued a statement. It says, quote, "We are once more violently confronted with the fatal consequences of having inadequate mental health care and support for persons suffering from mental illness and their families…. The Vasquez family expresses its deepest sympathies to the Marin family who laid their beloved, Isaac Marin, to rest this past weekend. We know your pain too well…Once again, we call upon the Government to take immediate and decisive action to address the deficiencies in the mental health care services available in this country. We urge the Government to establish:-

An acute unit at the KHMH to provide short-term urgent care to persons experiencing an acute and volatile psychotic episode; and A forensic unit for patients to provide medium-term care to persons whose mental health condition involves prolonged episodes which may pose a threat to themselves or others."
