Reporting on Refugees
Mon, November 4, 2019
This weekend, Belizean journalists gathered at the Biltmore for a training on how to cover stories about refugees while protecting the refugees right to anonymity and safety. The training was hosted by United Nations High Commission for Refugees and the facilitators discussed national and international refugee laws and tips on how to protect the identity of refugees who are being threatened by gangs in their home countries among other topics. They also addressed the common misconceptions of refugees. Our reporters participated and they spoke with the lead presenter about the importance of this training.

Janice Marshall, Senior Consultant, UNHCR Belize
"Well the UNHCR, we believe that there is misunderstanding and misinformation about refugees. A lot of people don't understand the difference between a refugee and a migrant and particular special circumstances of refugees and also the great contributions that some refugees are making in the country of Belize so we thought it would be good to explain a number of these things to journalists and members of the media so that there would be great understanding and more stories could be told about refugees with better understanding and more awareness. I think it would help everyone, the refugee community and ordinary Belizeans to understand the situation better."

"Ordinary migrants are people who move for any number of reasons voluntarily from their home country to another country, it might be for economic reasons because they think they will get another job, it might be to join family members who have gone ahead, it might be for education, any number of reasons. I myself am a migrant in Belize. However, refugees are people who are forced to flee, they have no choice but to leave their country, they are not going voluntarily and they are fleeing because they are at risk of something very bad happening to them at home for very specific reasons."

The training was a one day event on Saturday.
