Another Wagner Murdered
Wed, November 20, 2019
Monday night was the eve of Garifuna Settlement day but while the seaside town of Dangriga should only have been echoing with the beating of drums and voices raised in song, instead, they heard gunshots, as a bullet found its target 20 year old Jahvis Wagner - who died on the spot in the Harlem area of Dangriga Town.

It's more than just another sad murder; it's now a web of familial violence: his stepfather Edwin Felix Nasario was killed in the parking lot of the Southern Regional Hospital in July.

Then In September, Jahvis Wagner's brother Jebran "Suku" Wagner was shot at a house party in Belize City. Three men, three executions, one family. Incomprehensibly sad, and Cherisse Halsall traveled to Dangriga today for a first hand account of Settlement Day Eve murder.

On Monday night when 20 year old Jahvis Wagner was shot to the forehead at point blank range. He became the third man in his family to die from gun violence in 2019. A childhood friend watched in disbelief as the tragedy unfolded. He spoke to us today but for fear of his own life only agreed to do so off camera.

Voice of: A friend of Jahvis Wagner
"I was walking through and alley and I saw three lone gunman and at the moment one of our other friends arrived on a cycle. He stopped and checked what was the problem then one lone gunman. His gun snapped at him a next gunman turned around and shot Jav in his forehead and one of them dropped the next young man that the gun snapped on. He ended up chasing one of the gunman but the gunman fired a single shot through the alley and the gunman exchange words with the young man and that was it. The young man turned back and the gunman continue run in which direction I don't sure."

"When the first gun shot rang everyone disappeared, everyone ran to safety, you know and they didn't after a while everyone came and when they saw it was Jav, no one believed it was him."

"I ran and when I came across I said no Jav, no Jav, I said no mein. And I ran to get my phone. I came back again then by the time I came back the police were taking their time coming. I told the officer to please assist the man because he was still breathing and I saw Jahvis took his last breath and the officer then picked him up and took him to the hospital and he was pronounced dead on arrival."

But it seems that Jahvis's death is one that could have been prevented and indeed police attempted to do so. Commissioner of Police Chester Williams says that police had knowledge of a feud that threatened the young man's life but may have been mislead by Wagner's family as to his whereabouts.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"Well obviously there is some issue between them and another individual. I'm not going to go into too much detail for the respect of the mother who I know is grieving severely at this time but it is something that the police are looking at and we're hoping that we will be able to get to the bottom of it."

"From a police standpoint. We continue to investigate the matter. We are looking for a person of interest. Once that person is caught then we'll see where the investigation goes from there. We know that um certain information was fed to us two weeks ago where Jahvis was concerned and we had made checks with his family and had been told that he had moved from Dangriga and had been living in some other area of the country. Apparently he return to Dangriga unbeknownst to us and we only knew of his return after he was killed."

Daniel Ortiz:
"Is there any specific reason given to you guys from the family why Mr. Jahvis moved from the town, Sir?"

Chester Williams
"It was because of the threat to his life."

Neighbors throughout the area are shocked that a murder could have been carried out in cold blood amidst all the activity surrounding the eve of Garifuna Settlement Day.

Jason Guerrero, Neighbor
"By the time I got outside the body had already been removed."

"I'm surprised that it took place because the area was bustling at the time Garifuna drums were on, I think it was coming from his, his family's property drumming so it amazes me that somebody would do this in a crowd when it's so bustling. Apparently they shot him point bank I would think that they would have had to. And took off and I would think also that we in the area do not know this perpetrator."

Jahvis's friends and family will remember him as a joyful youth gunned down too soon:

Voice of: A friend of Jahvis Wagner
"Javis was a cool, humble, loving person I don't know why they have to take my brother life like that because he never deserve to die like that none of them you know those guys were always happy, dancing, family you know Jav was somebody that He left shocking to the whole Dangriga on an 18th night."

"Well Suku and Jav I knew them since I was a kid, from when I was playing football I know Jav and Jebran and we always used to play football together in Wagerale. Nazy I didn't know Nazy like that but always respect Nazy hail him and what's not."

The friend and eyewitness also recounted Jahvis's feeling's in the days after his brother's death when unbeknownst to him, he, himself had very little time left. Here he is with his mother looking into his brother's casket.

Voice of: A friend of Jahvis Wagner
"Well Jav was hurt, Jav was crying, Jav couldn't believe his brother was gone his twin brother left him because those twoy this in gun violence."

"He didn't have those kind of intentions because he was preparing to leave the country due to his brother and his step father that died in gun violence. Jav supposed to be flying out today. Jav Was supposed to have flown out today."

And Dangriga town is shaken after having the joyous mood of its biggest festivity shattered by violence.

Jason Guerrero, Neighbor
"I would say that it's slowly rising. I feel that what the problem is that our homegrown youth are leaving to go to other communities I'll dare say it Belize City and they are importing the violence into Dangriga."

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"I want to appeal to the public about anyone who may have any information pertinent to the investigation to please call the 0-800-922-TIPS number."

Police are asking anyone with information to call the 0-800-922-TIPS number.
