Police Failed To Follow Standing Orders, Leading To Detainee’s Suicide
Fri, November 29, 2019
The Commissioner also spoke about the detainee who apparently committed suicide in custody.

39 year old Jose Lorenzo Espinoza allegedly committed Suicide inside Queen Street Cell block on Wednesday.

He allegedly did it with a pair of shoelaces when he was alone in a cell. The standing orders for all detained persons clearly state that shoelaces should be taken away from all detainees.

It is the second death to have occurred in police custody at this police station since June and Commissioner Williams says a thorough investigation will be done:

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"I have directed an internal investigation into that matter from what I have been briefed there is some degree of gross negligence on the part of the officers who dealt with the detainee and I have referred the matter to professional standards branch and the chips will fall where they may."

Espinoza was detained for a minor offence.
