The Dominican Situation
Thu, December 5, 2019

As we reported earlier this week Chief elections officer Josephine Tamai is heading the elections observer mission to Dominica. Ambassador Assad Shoman is also there as part of a Commonwealth Observer Team.

The general elections are tomorrow and they are already observing' some real tension. According to a Washington Post article, supporters of the opposition party United Workers Party blocked the road leading to the Douglas- Charles Airport. It was chaos and many travelers had to walk over a mile to get to the airport. In the article it explains that "Opposition supporters have called for more rigorous checking of voter registrations and a prohibition on expatriate Dominican citizens returning to vote in elections.

The opposition has accused the government of buying voters by providing supporters with tickets home around election time." Again, classic election time grievances, complaints and finger pointing While the opposition party supporters want to stop tomorrow's election in another online article on "Loop Cayman" the Dominican PM Roosevelt Skerrit says "Anti-Government protests in Dominica will not stop Friday's General Elections from taking place adding that the supporters are being given mind-altering drugs to make them behave in this manner.
