| OCEANA Says Gillnet Ban Must Be Decisive |

| Oceana is once again calling for a ban on gillnets, but this time the NGO says the ban must be decisive and of meaningful longevity.
In December of 2019 GOB declared gillnets destructive, however, the proposed ban has no defined term.
And, in a press release today Oceana stated that proposing a ban with no defined term, means that GOB is not only passing on Oceana's offer to provide one million dollars to support Belizean fishers as they transition away from gillnets, but also compromising the restoration of Belizean fisheries and ecosystems as regional experience to speaks to the fact that it takes time for ecosystems to recover from destructive fishing practices.
