Should Hon. Bev Have Gotten Upgraded to Full Minister?
Mon, February 24, 2020
We spoke to both Montero and Williams at a groundbreaking for the Coastal Road Paving project - which we'll tell you all about later in the news.

We also asked Williams about what some perceive to be a recent slight. She was recently elected second deputy leader of the UDP - and is Minister of State in the Ministry of Immigration. Fair enough, that's usually the role for a first term representative, but what happens when that rep is also the third most senior person in the ruling party? We asked Williams about that today in view of the fact that another minister of state - Omar Figueroa was upgraded to full minister last week:...

Jules Vasquez- Reporter
"Recently they got a ministerial upgrade for one minister of state. Some felt, that as the second deputy, you should have gotten an upgrade to full minister as well."

Hon. Beverly Williams- Minister of State
"Jules, there are many things that we would like but I am a UDP, I am party loyalist and I support those decisions that the Prime Minister makes. I fully agreed that Omar was right for that position and especially for the minister it was appropriate at this time. Who knows what will happen when we win the next general elections."

Jules Vasquez
"You are right now in the back row, do you expect you will be brought up front? When Contreras was sitting on the third spot, you took his post."

Hon. Beverly Williams
"Erwin Contreras was sitting on the third spot indeed. It's not an automatic upgrade but I will continue to serve my part and I will do what is best for the UDP and for the country of Belize."

Jules Vasquez
"Is there sexism in the system, in the political leadership system, when, you know, we are talking about Omar Figueroa good be the person- I am hearing talk that people are supporting him. He has one and a half terms, you have one term almost completed. I am saying that, is there sexism in that people don't immediately think of Tracy Panton or yourself?"

Hon. Beverly Williams
"As PM has stated from the very start, 2016, that his assignment goes by seniority. We've always, over the last four years acknowledged that it's based on seniority and Omar is the next man up."
