Police Say Border Blocking is A Diplomatic Matter
Mon, May 11, 2020
So, the commotion at the border between Melchor de Mencos and Benque Viejo Town caused Belizeans to take notice. Belize Police were also informed of the situation, and they were following it, in the event that they were called upon to keep the peace on the Belizean side of the border.

Police Commissioner Chester Williams told the press in a briefing this morning that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would have to take lead in resolving it since it is outside of their jurisdiction:

Chester Williams - Commissioner of Police
"Yes, we have received information that the Guatemalans are protesting on the Guatemalan side of Melchor. That protest has now resulted in the blockages of the Melchor Bridge. Yes, we know that this bridge is key in terms of goods coming into Belize from the Guatemalan side, particularly fuel. That matter is being looked at through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I guess they are going to see how it can be resolved through diplomatic means. It is not a matter for us because it is not within our country. And so, we just wait to see what will happen through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs."
