The Givers That Keep On Giving
Wed, May 13, 2020
Last night, we told you how the Belize Indian Community was moving around the different constituencies of Belize City to spread a bit of humanitarian cheer to needy city residents who have been devastated financially by the coronavirus pandemic.

Well today, they were in the Pickstock division to deliver food packages to residents through their area rep., Wilfred Elrington. We stopped by this morning to speak with the donors and the recipient of this aid from the Indian Community. Here's what they told us about how it will work for residents from that division:

Arun Hotchandani - Honorary Consul General of India
"Between yesterday and today, we're dealing with the Pickstock and, I think, the Collet divisions. This is the continuation of the heed to the call where we, as a community, are getting together to offer this assistance to those who are in need, and who fell through the cracks."

Reporter
"Give us an idea of the feedback from the recipients of this relief help."

Arun Hotchandani
"I must say that it's been overwhelming. Do you know the smile? Do you know how touching it is when someone would come and say how happy they are to have received? And to be honest, it's the basic food needs. That's what should be looked at. It's that we're providing people the basic food needs, and I think that's extremely important in us offering it."

Hon. Wilfred Elrington - Area Rep., Pickstock
"The residents come, and they get what is being offered because everybody can do with a little assistance. But, it is not a mass rush on our constituency. Not that many people, it seems to me, have lost their jobs. Those who have lost their jobs come forward and ask for assistance. But, as a rule, it has not been overwhelming, as far as the requests for assistance go in the Pickstock constituency."

The Honorary Consul General told us that the Indian Community has been making similar donations in communities located in other parts of the country.
