Saldivar Not Ashamed To Broach Anti-Corruption Legislation
Mon, June 1, 2020
So - to get it straight - if Saldivar says he told the truth to Cabinet - it suggests that the PM was not doing so to the nation - which is a very serious matter in terms of UDP politics.

But Saldivar isn't shy it seems, because he was willing even to propose leading the way on anti-corruption measures:

Hon. John Saldivar, Belmopan Area Rep.
"I spoke a little bit about governance reform that we should not lose sight of that and that we've got to keep our focus and commitment on anti-corruption laws and getting those in place."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"You speak about governance reform to be exact and you said the new legislation must clearly define violations of the public trust and levy stiff penalty for contraventions. You know that your critics and they are many will say that you are one of the persons who violated the public trust."

Hon. John Saldivar, Belmopan Area Rep.
"That has not been proven and it's not the case. The discussion itself is repulsive without any evidence, but go ahead."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"Repulsive to you, but I am saying that we are talking in general terms about violating public trust, right."

Hon. John Saldivar, Belmopan Area Rep.
"Which I have not done."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"I have to respectfully disagree with you, energetically, but the point I'm getting to is that in this reform, would you call for campaign finance reform?"

Hon. John Saldivar, Belmopan Area Rep.
"I certainly believe there is need for campaign laws and I am prepare to lead in the drafting of those laws."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"Now you realize that would sound hypocritical."

Hon. John Saldivar, Belmopan Area Rep.
"For those who believe I am guilty of something, but those who know that I am not guilty of something, for those who know the John Saldivar, for those who know the man of integrity and honesty, that doesn't sound hypocritical at all."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"Are you making a commitment to completely clean up that system the front door and the backdoor, because I know that you all create legislations that guards the front door and then you all go and get money at the back door."

Hon. John Saldivar, Belmopan Area Rep.
"We've got to be careful in coming up with this legislation to ensure that we don't chase the good and honest money out of politics by opening it up so much that it opens up the donor to victimization."

Saldivar spoke to the press for about an hour.
