Aeroboxes For Safer Intubations
Tue, June 23, 2020
The Ministry of Health also got another donation today, and this time, it came from the furniture and home appliance wholesaler, Courts/Unicomer.

The company handed over 19 aero boxes to the Ministry of Health, custom-made by Mabe, the Mexican appliance company.

Now if you're asking what's an aero box, they are plastic boxes that create a barrier between COVID-19 patients and health workers during intubation procedures.

These ones are to designated for Belizean front-line healthcare workers and 7News was at the handing over this morning:

Javier Antonio Ponce - Managing Director, UNICOMER
"This is an initiative of UNICOMER, with MABE, one of our main suppliers for major whites, which is a supplier for many of the countries that UNICOMER is [located], in the Caribbean. It's basically a donation for 19 aero boxes, which as you can see, are devices that could be used for medical purposes to try to abide by the social distancing that we need to do right now. So, this is all in support of the Health Ministry, and their guidelines to attend to patients at hospitals. So, we are happy to be contributing to the wellbeing of the people here in Belize, and we hope they will be put to good use."

Melinda Guerra - Regional Manager, Central Health Region
"This definitely comes in very handy for the different hospitals and our regional. So, it's usually used for in-care patients. The medical care providers are going to be using it when they have to intubate patients, COVID-19 patients of course. So, that's where we're going to be using it."

Reporter
"So, explain how it helps, how you make use of it in patient care."

Melinda Guerra
"Normally, these boxes would sit right on top of the patient's head and shoulders - that is for COVID-19 patients, and when the doctor is actually intubating these patients, that's the time when we have more of the virus that can spread out. So, this acts as a barrier between the patient and the healthcare provider. So, it minimizes the risk of exposure to the COVID-19 virus."
