Another SOE Murder In Martin's
Tue, April 16, 2024
He left his home in the company of a woman only to be shot and killed a few moments later and left on the pavement to die.

He is 33 year old Michael Usher better known as Jigga, the City's most recent murder victim - the 5th since the state of emergency was declared three weeks ago.

Jomarie Lanza spoke with his mother today and here's what she told us about the events leading up to her son's death.

Spectators and residents huddled together on Flamboyant street last night as a man lay dying on the pavement in the presence of police.

33 year old Michael Jigga Usher, a well known figure in the Majestic Alley Community was gunned down in front of this apartment complex just before 8:00. But what was Usher doing in the Martins area?

His mother gave us a rundown today as to what or who may be behind this tragedy

Ethlyn Harris, Mother of deceased
"He met an old girlfriend that he had long time, a clear skin girl from behind Martins area. He came and the girl said long time she hasn't come through this alley and I said, "Oh". When I looked at her I said "Hmm this is the same girl that people tell me he is always going back there to see." And I warned him stop going back there because you don't know who is who."

"And that was the last I heard until when yesterday evening I got the news he got shot up back of Martin's and I didn't even know he would keep going back there. Never did know that he was still going back there."

He went right into the stronghold of another gang - and despite the SOE - he was shot from behind several times. Community outrage has been stoked because he was made to lie on the ground gasping for air as police waited for an ambulance.

In a previous interview the commissioner of police made it clear that the police are not the ones responsible for transporting injured persons.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"If you go anywhere in the world, do you see the police taking injured people to the hospital? No. We are the only ones who practice that nonsense in Belize. It's not the proper practice, and form a medical standpoint we are constantly being chastised by the medical practitioners for doing it. And it needs to come to an end."

But in the case of Usher, his mother believes that if they had acted with more of an urgency her son would have survived.

Ethlyn Harris, Mother of deceased
"I heard the police arrived but he was on the ground for 20 mins gasping and gasping you know and before he got to the hospital I heard he was gone, he died."

Jo-
"You think if he was helped sooner that wouldn't have happened?"

Ethlyn Harris, Mother of deceased
"I believe so but maybe girl because you know what he got shot in his back and through his back. He was running though he ran because he ran off his tennis. My daughter in law found his tennis and everything. He had one foot on and one foot off. So he was running."

Jo
"So you think that chances are someone did this out of jealousy."

Ethlyn Harris, Mother of deceased
"I believe that girl have her people she deals with back there and they must have heard and known he goes back there. And I don't know right from there I believe the thing started."

Usher, the youngest of three boys and a father of one, was also his mother's primary care taker. Now a mother is left to not only reminisce on the memories of her youngest child but also adjust and adapt to life without the man who did everything for her.

Ethlyn Harris, Mother of deceased
"He easy, he easy but like drink. But an easy going fellow he is always in trouble with taking people things and my things and so but to say he would stab or cut anyone and get in those big big problems no."

Jo
"How would you want to remember him?"

Ethlyn Harris, Mother of deceased
"Oh lord sing and dance that's all everyone laugh when he comes here he has the whole neighborhood he is a jovial Jovial fellow."
