BSI/ASR Will Participate In COI Under Conditions
Tue, April 16, 2024
And as it relates to the sugar industry, the PM said that the commission of inquiry is full steam ahead - with conditions.

BSI/ASR had registered its concerns about the purpose of the inquiry, but they have agreed to participate once it doesn't delve too deep into their personal business. However, they have suggested taking their business elsewhere.

The PM said that comment was only made out of anger.

John Briceno, Prime Minister
"I think they did it more in their frustration, which I agree with them in a lot of it that sometimes BSCFA can be unreasonable in a lot of their demands but maybe BSFCA takes it personal because I say things how they are. We have three associations that have been working well with BSI and BSCFA refuses to and makes certain demands that they know that they can't meet. And I have been trying to work with both sides and we have been having some success. Right now, things are calm, we're working, we're going through with the Commissioner of Inquiry, BSI has already indicated that they will participate in the inquiry but in only certain aspects, the aspects that they believe infringes in their personal business and what is it that they do, they are not going to participate, and they have a right, but they want to look at, which is what we need to do, planting practices, harvesting practices, how to take care of our plants, the cane stalks, for instance now we have to make sure we have proper drainage, so when it rains the water doesn't stay, because when it rains, it's not a little bit, little bit, it rains hard then it stops and when that rain stays on for too long the heat kills the cane. So we have to have proper drainage, how is it that we're going to deliver the cane efficiently to BSI, these are certain things, how can we improve productivity with the same amount of cane, with the same amount of land, these are the issues that we need to address that can make us better. Now, can BSI become more efficient? Of course, and I'm sure that they're looking at that. We need to work with them to see what it is they are doing to increase their efficiencies in making sure they could take out every ounce of sugar from that cane."
