Cabinet Concerned With Blackouts
Wed, May 1, 2024
And while the fix is on its way - it's a terrible way to spend a vacation. You heard the island Mayor say that their tourism product is suffering and this afternoon, the tourism minister put as positive a spin nn it as he could, saying, basically, "yeah, there is a problem":

Anthony Mahler, Minister of Tourism
"The bigger ones do, yes, it is problematic for us but we had a discussion in Cabinet about it yesterday and BEL is working feverishly to try an rectify the situation, it's not the best situation, we're still in high season right now per se and we believe that we'll get the solution implemented pretty soon."

"We're talking to Mexico as well and hopefully this can be rectified sooner rather than later."

We should note that Mexico is also at the peak of its demand - and according to BEL's engineers - is charging more than a dollar per kilowatt hour when it is under load. That's more than four times their usual high price and it is charged to discourage BEL from purchasing power.
