And, switching subjects now, today, almost exactly two weeks after the Holy Thursday hijacking, the Ministry of Civil Aviation held a press conference to
And if you heard that it was held by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, and thought that maybe the Minister John Briceno would be there - well you would be. wrong. He was at a ceremonial event instead, the police commissioner change of command in Belmopan, and, second, as we all know by now, he doesn't do press conferences.
So, his CEO, Narda Garcia led the event at the Biltmore. We jump ahead to the moment where the Deputy Director of Civil Aviation confirmed the most compelling part of the narrative: that air traffic controllers collaborated with pilot Howell Grange to trick the hijacker. Here's how he explained it:
Stanley Gideon, Deputy Director Civil Aviation
"This is where the ruse started. He asked them to please speak in Spanish. He wants to pretend that he's going through Mexico airspace on his way to United States. And when he got closer and the ruse is when they have transverse United Mexican airspace to have an American voice come on, come on."
"And this went without a hitch. That was the amazing part of this that ATC picked up on the pilot's ruse. And for the next hour and a half there about in the airspace, this aircraft, as you can see, I'm pretty sure some of you guys have flight tracker and was monitoring this aircraft never left Belizean airspace."
"The pilot flew in a way to confuse the hijacker and stayed over the water. And what we learned is that he's tried to stay in the clouds and this way ATC could have continued the ruse. So when he spoke back to us and says in Spanish that he's permission to transit through Mexican airspace, the air traffic controller answered as though he was a Mexican air traffic controller and cleared him while at the same time giving vectors to make sure that he stayed close to any potential landing airports in Belize."
"When it was time to come back to Belize, international airport as such, the ruse was now to ask for an American accent to pretend that they're coming in to land in American airport. And he made his first attempt to land from a west to an east runway alignment, which is runway 07."
"Everything was going great right up until the last point where the hijacker, for whatever reason, said that this is not Lambert and forced the aircraft back up in the air. The aircraft went back up in the air and progressed to the north of our station, the international airport and then progressed to the northeast for about eight minutes heading out and then it turned back in."
"During this time, ATC was giving the pilot vectors to different runways in case he needed to turn and land because no things were getting very critical. I think by now everybody understands that fuel has become an issue."
"The pilot made up his mind as we understood and decided that he's going to come to the land at the International and he then picked the runway from east to west, runway 25, which allowed him to come almost straight in off the water and landed and that event was then over at 10-11 and the security forces took over after that when the aircraft landed."
"But this was a skillful ruse between the air traffic controllers and the pilots to put this entire flight in different regions but it stayed over with these and that coordination cannot be matched at any level I can say with amazement how the pilot and the ATC worked together to pull off this ruse."
