A Belizean Taxi Driver got bail today after spending the weekend in custody, accused of rape. He is 30 year old Brandon Tillett.
The victim told police that she caught a taxi after coming off work but instead of taking her home, he took her to his house instead where he raped her.
Tillett appeared before a senior magistrate today who took no plea since the matter should be dealt with on indictment.
Tillet's attorney, Ronell Gonzalez was able to make a submission on his behalf as to why he should be granted bail. He explained:
Ronell Gonzalez, Attorney
"Yes, well I made submissions to the court in relation to bail for Mr Tillet. The grounds presented to the magistrate were that he is gainfully employed full-time as a taxi driver. He has runs that are scheduled runs that he does every day, one. Two, he has dependents that he is responsible for. He has two minor children and a common law spouse. But most importantly and this is the ground that the magistrate would have found striking to have granted bail for Mr. Tillet. The information was that Mr. Tillet was detained and has been in custody since Tuesday of last week, the 13th of May and has since been in custody. There has been a delay of bringing him before the court of no fault of his of course and therefore he would have been granted bail on that premise. Normally where a person is detained and has the option to make an application to the high court for bail, It would normally be within a week's time that such application is heard. In this case I made submissions that that period of a week time where he would have been able to make an application for bail has already passed and therefore as a somewhat remedy to him at the very least he should have been granted bail today in the magistrate's court."
Tillet was granted bail of $5,000 dollars.
Conditions of Tillet's bail are that he must not contact or interfere with the victim or any members of her family. He is expected to appear back in court on July 1st.
