A man is left homeless tonight after a late evening fire destroyed the building he was living in. The fire occurred around 4 on Moya Street. No one was home when the firefighters responded, and while that structure was destroyed, the other building in the yard received slight damage. The Station Officer, Gladstone Bucknor, gave us preliminary information.
Gladstone Bucknor, Station Officer, Belize City NFS
"It's a wooden structure, 8 by 10 structure, wooden structure. The owner of the structure is Mr. Leon York. At this present moment, we're about to do our investigation and see what caused the fire."
Reporter
"He wasn't home at the time?"
Gladstone Bucknor, Station Officer, Belize City NFS
"That's still in the investigation. I can't answer that as yet, because we need to do an investigation."
Reporter
"It's just a small structure attached to the house?"
Gladstone Bucknor, Station Officer, Belize City NFS
"Right. It's a small structure about three feet away from the cement structure, which, as you can see, only the roof damage on one of the rooms."
Reporter
"Since it was such a small structure, I assume it went up pretty fast?"
Gladstone Bucknor, Station Officer, Belize City NFS
"Yes. This went up really, really fast. We started to see how another Belizean lost their home. It's really sad."
Reporter
"Did you notice if there were items inside, like furniture and appliances?"
Gladstone Bucknor, Station Officer, Belize City NFS
"Well, we haven't started yet. I want to get into the rubble right now, and I want to see what all remains left in there."
