And another nuisance that the Ministry of Transport has to tackle is that of ear splitting motorcycles. which, regrettably, you hear often enough zingining right past this studio during the news.
That's noise pollution - and one more enforcement issue for Transport.
Today we asked Williams if they will be enforcing the law on sound pollution by motorcycles. He said enforcement is a start:
Chester Williams, CEO, Ministry of Transport
"I have had a number of meetings with the Chief Transport Officer and certainly there are going to be changes in how we do business. I have noted that there is a serious gap in enforcement when it comes to our traffic laws and so my instruction to the Chief Transport Officer is to ensure that we have adequate officers on our streets and highways to enforce these regulations."
"And so one of the things we're looking at is to increase the number of traffic wardens across the country. We want to have at least a two shift system where we can have traffic wardens on our highways, at least until 12 midnight everyday. On weekends, perhaps until 3am, that's when nightclubs close and people would tend to drive the highways or within the municipalities under the influence so again increasing the number of personnel to be able to meet demands is important and so we're working on that but even before we get there, in terms of the increase of personnel I believe there is a lot we can do to ensure that we make this country safer. Motorcycles are an issue, I have gotten a number of complaints from citizens across the country about the noise coming from these motorcycles, the reckless nature with which they drive, I'm currently monitoring Belize City because there is an area on the Philip Goldson Highway between Buca Shell roundabout all the way up to Benny's roundabout, that area in between. What I'm being told is that almost every weekend persons on motorcycles go and run race in that area late in the evening time and so that's an area we're monitoring very closely because again that is being reckless and it needs to stop so we'll be working with the police to see how we can address the issue as well as the local traffic department in Belize City to see how best we can work together to mend that issue."
