"Jake Breaks" Illegal Within City Limits But Mayor Powerless To Stop It
Wed, May 21, 2025
And, for many, an even bigger noise polluter than motorcycles are those deafening "jake brakes" used on 18 wheelers.

Now the law makes it plain: "No vehicle shall be used on any public road if it is not equipped with a silencer to reduce the noise from its exhaust, and no tractor truck shall use Jake brakes within any municipal boundary."

Mayor Bernard Wagner governs the largest city in the land - with a vast army of traffic wardens at his disposal - but when we spoke to him today - he didn't seem very confident he could do anything about it:

Bernard Wagner, Mayor, Belize City
"Again, we know we have the legislation and the books with respect to that violation but it is very hard to really enforce because you would have to have the necessary personnel on the spot when that individual utilises the Jake Brakes. So it is a law, and all we can continue to ask for compliance by the residents, the drivers, the truckers who come within our city limits to understand that if caught, if one of our enforcement officers are on the spot when they do that they can be charged."
