Church Senator Wade Advocates Raising Belize's Age of Consent to 18
Fri, October 23, 2026
But the church senator is looking at this from another angle and believes that the age of consent needs to be raised to 18. The age of consent is presently 16, but Wade believes that moving the age up two years will help solve the issue of young girls being preyed upon:

Louis Wade:
"I think that we can make a change in is legislation that moves the age of consent from 16 to 18.A person is very young, and many of them are still in school or in a youth group, and then they are being bombarded with sexual choices, and so it becomes like a gray area between 16 and 18. So a person becomes legal age at 18, but can make sexual choices at 16. So a predator can wait till the person gets 16, and then begin to make certain advances, where if it was a child, it would immediately be illegal. But between age 16 and 18, there is now a gray area, and we have asked the government to fix it, and they have denied. And I think it needs to be fixed. We have moved marriage from 16 to 18, and we need to do the same with consent."
