Education Ministry Evaluates Accreditation Status of Online University of the People
Fri, October 23, 2026
Looking towards education, the Ministry is not sure if the University of the People, a university marketed online, is still accredited in Belize, even though many Belizeans go there:
Francis Fonseca: "Yeah, I'm not 100% sure, so I don't want to say anything. My understanding is that it is, but these things change from time to time. So I haven't seen a current accreditation list, so I will reserve my... my final statement on that. But the ministry can confirm that. But these lists, every year, you have to review the lists because they change. I know in the past it was accredited, but I would have to confirm if it remains accredited in Belize."
Education Ministry Transitions Tertiary Scholarships to Online Application Portal
But when it comes to tertiary-level scholarships, the Ministry now has developed an easier route through the Ministry's online portal. The practice of going hat in hand to your area rep is no longer necessary, and students can simply apply via the Ministry of Education website portal. Fonseca explained:
Francis Fonseca: "We... we have put in place over the last two years a completely new system where we have a Ministry of Education financial assistance portal. So anybody, any of you can access that portal. You can submit your application for financial assistance. You don't have to come to me or to any other representative-you have direct access to that portal. And it has very clear, established criteria that you have to meet. So it's a very, very equitable system, you know, very transparent. So we're proud of that system, you know, and so I think we've addressed that matter."
The portal is open to all tertiary-level students.

Cari Shores Rep Endorses Eluide Miller for Belize City Mayoral Slate
Turning back now to our interview with Immigration Minister Kareem Musa, we also asked him to play the part of PUP pundit and look ahead to the upcoming municipal elections, particularly in Belize City.
He said he's with Team Eluide:
Kareem Musa: "Mr. Miller and his team, and the mayor in Belize City right now as we speak... they sent me some photographs working on Seashore Drive, on the pathway that a lot of my constituents go and enjoy in the evenings and mornings for their exercise. So I'm extremely excited. A lot of great projects coming. A lot of streets have been repaired over the last six years since we've been there. So I'm excited. This is a young, dynamic team. We'll have the leadership of Mr. Elluide Miller. He has my full support and all of his team, and I'm 100% convinced that we will deliver for the People's United Party."
Reporter: "Continuing in the political arena, the Prime Minister has announced that he will run once more. Does he have your support?"
Kareem Musa: "Absolutely, absolutely. The Prime Minister won in 2020, 26 to 5. In 2025, he not only won by 26 to 5, but the margins increased in all our divisions, including Caribbean Shores. I know that when it comes to leadership and when it comes to politicians, it is always important that you read the room. I know there has been a lot of criticism, but at the same time, you do your own introspection, your own reflection, and you don't just listen to your core supporters, because they will always tell you, 'Run, run, run.' But it's very important that every six months to a year, you do that introspection, see if you still have your family support-that is important-see if you still have the support of your Cabinet to go a third term. But I think he's well on his way to a third term."
