Evicted Tenants Accused of Landlord's Murder
posted (November 3, 2008)

But first, a landlord was killed in Sandhill this weekend, and police believe that the pair that stabbed him to death are former tenants he had evicted the week before. Had they failed to pay their rent? Were they refusing to move out after being given an eviction notice? Or were they out to rob their landlord? There are many theories on this one: neighbours say one thing, his family says another, and the police, still another: Jacqueline Godwin got all sides today.

Jacqueline Godwin Reporting,
Tonight police are on the lookout for these two young men. Twenty five year old Honduran national Elder Jonathan Ulloa and twenty two year old Guatemalan national Jayro Gonzales, the two are being sought after they chopped and killed sixty seven year old Candelario Montes Flores.

Around nine forty five on Saturday night the elderly man’s body was found lying face up in a pool of blood inside his residence in Ladyville Village. It is still not known what happened here at no. 58 Compassion Lane. The reports have been conflicting but sources tell 7NEWS that the suspects rented rooms from Mr. Candelario Flores better known as Bejo. The information suggests that the tenants did not want to pay the landlord his money and that the elderly man was killed and then robbed.

It is believed that there may have been other tenants at home when Flores was murdered but reports are that their lives may have been threatened and that is why no one came to the landlord’s aid.

Cynthia Diaz, Neighbour
“Nobody helped him. Nobody, all of them ran from the house. About 8 of them were there and I told my mom that if we go we would get hurt too. I told my mom the man needed help and we called police and they couldn’t helped the man, all of them ran.”

Police investigation strongly suggests however that only Ulloa and Gonzales are the prime suspects in the case. Lead Investigator Corporal Jorge Lemus says at this time they do not have any evidence to indicate that robbery was the motive.

Jacqueline Godwin,
Do you know if anything was stolen from Mr. Flores?

Cpl. Jorge Lemus, Lead Investigator – CIB Ladyville
“Not to the police’s knowledge. It is an ongoing investigation and we will continue the investigation.”

Jacqueline Godwin,
Did police receive reports that the deceased had been threatened before?

Cpl. Jorge Lemus,
“We have no knowledge of any threat. It is just a misunderstanding that occurred. Initial investigation is showing that this male person had a misunderstanding with two of his tenants. Upon some monies that were owed to him for rent hence the reason that these people inflicted the chop wounds to him.”

Samuel Elvira Villalta and Roberto Elvira Sagastuna say they believe that their father and uncle was already in bed but got up when he heard a knock on the door. The family believes that their loved one may have been robbed and that the same persons involved are the tenants he had tried to evict just days before.

Roberto Elvira Sagastuna, Nephew of Murder Victim
“He was already sleeping, I think, and he got up and opened the door for the man. They wanted money but he had none and they got bex. They said if he didn’t give them the money he will kill them. Maybe he thought they were playing, the two men, I have their name and their age. He said he didn’t have any money and maybe they used the machete.”

Samuel Elvira Villalta, Son of murder victim
“Probably they were doing things they were not supposed to be doing like using drugs and so on and he had asked them to be removed, to move out of the place and they got upset and from Wednesday they had it planned and then it didn’t happened until Saturday because he had chased them the Wednesday and because of that, I don’t see any valid or good reason why they had to do something like that. He was in his right asking them to move out of his yard.”

Jacqueline Godwin,
The family knows if anything was taken from the home or from your dad?

Samuel Elvira Villalta,
“Well actually no. Maybe probably money but we wouldn’t know.”

Candelario Montes Flores was chopped in the head and body. Alice Vargas like her other neighbours believe that some money was stolen from the victim after he was killed.

Jacqueline Godwin,
Why do they believe he was killed?

Alice Vargas, Neighbour
“They feel he got killed because of money, the money transaction with the boys. Only that because he doesn’t fool with people. He is straight from work, riding his bike with his two dogs and home.”

Jacqueline Godwin,
Any money was stolen?

Alice Vargas,
“I heard they say $3,500. That is what I heard, I don’t know if it is true because I wasn’t over here at the time. When I woke up in the morning one of my friends told me about it.”

The neighbours are shocked because the victim truly tried to live his life according to God’s will by extending a helping hand to those in need.

Judith Westby, Neighbour
“We never expected a violent crime like that would happen this side because back here is quiet and people don’t fool with each other back here. I was shocked when my mom came and told me.”

Jacqueline Godwin,
I understand that he was a very quiet individual who basically kept to himself.

Judith Westby,
“Yes he barely could talk English so he didn’t fool with people.”

Daniel Trapp, Neighbour
“Very nice, very helpful in the community. The man was a very progressive being and upstanding and loved people. He helped out a lot of people out here including myself.”

Jacqueline Godwin,
So why you think they killed him?

Daniel Trapp,
“I think somebody was trying to rob him.”

Vilam Pech, Neighbour
“He was a nice person who didn’t mess with anyone. He was from work to home and if you meet him on the street he will say hello to you. If you don’t say hello to him, he won’t say hello to you and I got shocked when I heard that because he is a nice person and I am sorry about that.”

Alice Vargas,
“I was shocked. I couldn’t believe anyone around here would do that. I am really shocked because that man doesn’t fool with anyone. That man goes straight home, goes to his work and comes right back home. Everybody has the manners to tell him morning like that. Bejo we know him as.”

Jacqueline Godwin,
And he did? He rented rooms?

Alice Vargas,
“He rented rooms because he has two houses for rent. He had this house and the next one over there. But that next one just built because that is cement. He just built that next house over there.”

The police remain hopeful that they will soon have the wanted men in custody.

Cpl. Jorge Lemus,
“We have obtained a warrant in the first instance for the arrest. We believe they are still here because we have certain documents to show that they are still here.”

Jacqueline Godwin,
But because they are from neighbouring countries you believe they may be heading to the border?

Cpl. Jorge Lemus,
“Yes. We have sent out a release already to all border points for these two suspects.”

Daniel Trapp,
“Actually if you ask me lock them up and throw away the key. Give them life because the death sentence is not the cure for crime. As a matter of fact, if anybody kills anybody, leave it to God. I don’t see no other way to deal with them but once you arrest them, give them life.”

Vilma Pech,
“They killed him cruel so, cut out the eyes, chopped him up, but God will take that. They can hide from the law but they can’t hide from God’s eyes.”

Samuel Elvira Villalta,
“Well of course if they are caught we would want justice, most definitely.”

The family say the body of Candelario Montes Flores will be taken back to Guatemala where he will be laid to rest on Wednesday. Jacqueline Godwin reporting for 7NEWS.

Police have issued a formal “wanted “bulletin for the Jonathan Ulloa and Jayro Gonzales.
