Family says He Killed Their Love One; Cop Says Family Is Tormenting Him
posted (March 22, 2011)
Just over one year ago, University student Teddy Murillo was killed; the family said that a police man dad it, investigators did not find evidence supporting that and no one has been charged.

But even 13 months later, for the family of this promising young man, their grief is still raw - and on Sunday it spilled out. That's when the mother of the deceased Danalyn Murillo went to the PUP Convention for Lake Independence to vote. That's where she saw the police man she believes killed her son for the first time. He is Constable David Griffith. Murillo went after him verbally - and it caused a big scene at the convention.

Now we have never said his name before in connection with this story - though the subject has been widely discussed in the public. But today his friend corporal Darrell Tutsi Usher brought the story to us on Griffith's behalf saying that he's the one Murillo called "murderer." And because of that, Griffith has made a complaint against Murillo. Corporal Usher says it started when he and Griffith were at the convention:…

Cpl. Darrell "Tutsi" Usher, says Murillo berated P.C. Griffith
"Well about 4pm myself along with Griffith was passing through the PUP convention. I was at the corner of Gill and Faber's Road when I heard a female voice shouting out loud 'murderer - murderer, you kill my son, David Griffith you kill Teddy Murillo, my son' so upon hearing that I started to walk towards St. John's Vianney where PC Griffith was, at this time he was walking towards me. I saw a red skin lady I learnt to be Ms. Murillo following behind him telling him 'murderer, murderer' it reach to a point that the lady got in front of him and point in his face with her left hand stating 'murderer, murderer, you kill my son and you will get it soon too' other people along with myself told PC Griffith not to answer and he did not answer though out the entire thing. He got into a vehicle that I had there and he left. But I must that the young man felt so embarrassed out there, when I call him to tell him to just relax he was crying. It hurt me because he is my friend and I see what he is going through in front of everybody out there. That lady came out there and hollered that and in all honesty to the young man to me from my knowledge I know it is not so. I know he didn't kill anybody, but the thing that the police department left it to reach too far. The department is not taking it serious because it is going too far, you see how far it went in front of everybody. When I spoke to the young man he was crying. He feel really humiliated. Let say for argument sake the young man would have turn around and answer or response in a way or knock someone - by right I am telling you Griffith would have been in handcuff right now. It is unfair, but the thing that I am saying is that i am not pushing for them to arrest Ms. Murillo and out her in a cell block because she is a woman and I understand that she is still grieving but then the public have to know that we are grieving too. If you are innocent of doing something and you know to yourself and everyday people are tormenting you...."

Jules Vasquez
"Do you accept that you may be provoking a bad situation?"

Cpl. Darrell "Tutsi" Usher, says Murillo berated P.C. Griffith
"I accept it Jules but this thing have to come to a stop because then for too long Griffith and I have not been saying anything and to me the more we are not saying anything - it is going too far. I don't know when the next confrontation may be and as I tell Griffith - to me it's like a cat and a dog. A dog is the big aggressor and the cat only back up - when you reach a wall and you can't back up anywhere you have to charge forward afterwards to protect yourself. We don't want to end up in that situation."

Jules Vasquez
"However she says also that you were out there with your firearms. Are you all authorized to have those firearms?"

Cpl. Darrell "Tutsi" Usher, says Murillo berated P.C. Griffith
"Jules, I have a license firearm. The understanding that I got is that you cannot have a firearm in the polling station, moreover Griffith does not have a license firearm."

Jules Vasquez
"But did he had a firearm?"

Cpl. Darrell "Tutsi" Usher, says Murillo berated P.C. Griffith
"He did not have a firearm that day. Griffith did not have any firearm that day."

And while that is their side of the story - there is always the other side. And that didn't play out in a cozy TV studio - this afternoon Danalyn Murillo went straight to the Raccoon Street Police station to see if there was any charge waiting for her:…

Danalyn Murillo stepped into the Raccoon street police station around 3:00 this afternoon accompanied by her siblings. She was greeted by Joan Sutherland of Belizeans for Justice.

As Murillo went upstairs they were joined by a feisty looking Yolanda Schackron

And pretty soon relatives, friends and supporters filled the lobby area: Anita Sebastian, Danalyn's Sister.

Anita Sebastian, Danalyn's Sister
"Yesterday my sister saw Mr. David Griffith for the first time. We all saw him for the first time and because she saw him for the first time that really touch her and she told him something - nothing that would kill him. You all could see he is still alive. Now because we are people of God, we would not hold a gun but that doesn't mean that we don't have backbone and that we wouldn't stand up for what we believe in. Mr. Griffith seems as though he is above the law. He is not above the law, He gave a complain on my sister but what he should have done was to confess to what he did."

Yolanda Schakron, Belizeans for Justice
"I don't think Ms. Murillo will be arrested because we are here today - Belizeans for Justice and if they arrest Ms. Murillo all of us is going to jail."

Jose Sanchez, Reporter
"Is Ms. Murillo going to be arrested or charge with anything?"

Sgt. Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Press Officer
"Man, Ms. Murillo is making a complaint at the internal affairs section. Right now she is giving a statement against police officers that.... and we will investigate her complaint. Ms. Murillo had a conversation with me yesterday whereby I advised her to come in and make a report and she did that. She is not being detained, so let's have no misconception."

Reporter
"So the complaint against Ms. Murillo against the police officer - what's coming out of that?"

Sgt. Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Press Officer
"Just like the public we as police officers have a right to make a report. If you believe your reputation is being tarnish or if you believe you have been aggress by someone wrongfully at the same time we will investigate his complaint also, we are not choosing any sides."

Murillo came down about forty five minutes later - and was calm and collected

Danalyn Murillo, Met With Police
"I had a very good meeting with the police officers. They search and there is no official complaint up there on me."

Jules Vasquez
"They are alleging that they both witness publicly berate Constable Griffith accused him of being a murderer and point in his face. How do you respond to that allegation?"

Danalyn Murillo, Met With Police
"Well that day is the first time in my life I see who is Mr. Griffith, that's my first encounter with him and yes I did say something to him but I don't think that the magnitude of what I said is anything over what I am feeling for the loss of my child and for losing someone and bearing the pain of losing a child. I can't see how they have any balance."

Jules Vasquez
"Cpl. Usher on his behalf claims that in fact the things you said to him and the way you said it embarrassed him so greatly that he was crying - Constable Griffith was crying."

Danalyn Murillo, Met With Police
"That's good to know that he can cry because if he can cry then he knows exactly what I do on a daily basis so that's all right if he cry. He still has a conscience if he cries."

Jules Vasquez
"They want you to be charge. They want you to go to court; they want you to be arraigned. How do you feel about that? Griffith and Usher specifically."

Danalyn Murillo, Met With Police
"It just shows the inequality that people feels in society. My son is dead, I have not had a day in court as yet, but you cry for nothing and you want your day in court. I just hope that it can be reverse and my day in court could come sooner than later."

Jules Vasquez
"You regret having that encounter with him?"

Danalyn Murillo, Met With Police
"Regret having the encounter? Literally I dint because I needed to see you took the life of my child and I needed to see him and it took a year and change for me to see this person that actually took the life of my child for nothing."

But before she left the station - Murillo also made one more allegation against PC Griffith

Reporter
"Did you see Griffith with a weapon?"

Danalyn Murillo, Met With Police
"Yes I saw him and I saw the weapon on his side and I told the officer in charge I saw the weapon, I told him that that man has a gun."

Jules Vasquez
"But according to Mr. Usher - his friend Mr. Griffith did not have any weapon out there."

Danalyn Murillo, Met With Police
"That's good that Mr. Usher can speak for Mr. Griffith, it seems that Mr. Usher is the mouth and Mr. Griffith is the hand."

We stress that though he has been widely labeled as Teddy Murrillo's killer, Constable Griffith - who is posted in Punta Gorda has never been formally charged or even detained in connection with the killing.
