Ruling Party Walks Out Of Jamaica Parliament
posted (March 22, 2024)
And now in some regional news...we've been showing you the budget debate in Belize for the past three nights.

Well, it's also debate time in Jamaica, but, in a most unusual event, on Tuesday the ruling party - the JLP - chose to stage a house walkout after attacks one the speaker by the Leader of the Opposition, Mark Golding.

Golding angered the JLP members including Prime Minister Andrew Holness, when he told the house that he was not comfortable with House Speaker Juliet Holness, who also happened to be the wife of Jamaica's head of government.

He said, quote, "the head of Parliament is now the spouse of the head of Government, does not sit well with the tradition that the speaker must act independently of the government of the day."
