Albert Vaughan Is New City Admin But Six Councillors Want To Block His Appointment
posted (April 15, 2024)
A new Belize City Council Administrator has been named to replace Stephanie Lindo - Garbutt who was murdered in March. But, tonight, the appointment of Albert Vaughan has the council deeply divided.

Vaughan - who is a former councillor and a loyalist to Mayor Bernard Wagner - and Freetown Rep Francis Fonseca - is not the choice of a bloc of 6 of the10 councillors. Deputy Mayor Allan Pollard is the most senior councilor in this group. Last week, they demanded that the administrator be chosen by the council caucus - which the mayor did not allow.

So, 7news is reliably informed that they went shopping for legal opinions today - and plan to seek an injunction blocking his appointment and to sue the council or the mayor for his appointment.

That would be pretty extreme - councillors suing their own council - but - at the preliminary stage-that is what is being discussed - according to sources. A release from the council says the decision to appoint him, quote, "follows the recommendations of the interview committee, recognizing Mr. Vaughan's exemplary track record."

We'll see where this one goes next as Vaughan has some senior political backing, but so do the councillors who may end up in open rebellion.
